TMC Power Struggle Explodes: Mamata ‘Replaced’ by Rebels, Didi Camp Hits Back with Bold Counter Move, Who’s Really in Charge?
As Arup Roy is named chairperson by rebel MLAs, Mamata Banerjee’s faction rushes to the Election Commission to assert control over Trinamool Congress.
A major political upheaval has erupted within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), with a rebel faction claiming to have “replaced” party supremo Mamata Banerjee as chairperson — a move that has triggered a full-blown leadership crisis in West Bengal politics.
The dramatic development comes in the wake of TMC’s recent electoral setback against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), intensifying internal divisions within the party.
Rebels Name Arup Roy as New Chief
In a swift and controversial move, the rebel camp announced senior MLA Arup Roy as the new chairperson of the party. The decision was reportedly taken during a closed-door “special session” held at a hotel in Kolkata.
Sources aligned with the rebel faction claimed that nearly 60 out of 80 TMC MLAs either attended or endorsed the session. Additionally, participation from former councillors of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and district-level leaders added weight to their claim of a parallel power structure.
The session, which lasted just over half an hour, also saw Leader of the Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee play a key role in forming a new national leadership hierarchy.

Mamata Camp Strikes Back
However, Mamata Banerjee’s faction wasted no time in responding. In a decisive counter, her loyalists submitted a fresh list of office bearers and national working committee members to the Election Commission of India (EC), reaffirming that Mamata Banerjee remains the undisputed head of the party.

This move is being seen as an attempt to establish official legitimacy and prevent any recognition of the rebel group’s claims.
A Party Divided
The ongoing conflict highlights a deepening fracture within the TMC, once known for its centralized leadership under Mamata Banerjee, often referred to as “Didi” by supporters.
Political observers believe the situation could escalate further if both factions continue to assert authority, potentially leading to legal and electoral complications over party symbol, leadership, and recognition.
What Lies Ahead?
With both camps digging in their heels, the battle for control of the Trinamool Congress is far from over. The Election Commission’s response will be crucial in determining which faction holds official recognition.
For now, the question remains — is Mamata Banerjee still firmly in charge, or is TMC witnessing the beginning of a dramatic power shift?
