India Never Negotiates with a Deadline: Piyush Goyal Signals Big Shift in India-US Trade Deal Talks, $1 Trillion Export Target in Focus
New Delhi pushes for preferential market access as tariff negotiations with the US intensify ahead of key meetings.
Piyush Goyal has indicated that India is open to finalising an interim trade agreement with the United States — but without being bound by deadlines.
Speaking amid ongoing negotiations, Goyal подчеркed that “India never negotiates with a deadline”, even as both sides work towards restructuring tariffs and securing better market access.
India Pushes for Preferential Access
At the heart of the discussions is India’s demand for “preferential treatment” in the US market, giving Indian exporters an edge over global competitors. The proposed interim deal is aimed at creating a favorable tariff environment, especially as global trade policies continue to evolve.
India is targeting an ambitious $1 trillion export milestone by 2026–27, and securing improved access to the US — one of its largest trading partners — is seen as a key step toward achieving that goal.
Key Meetings Underway
The negotiations have gained momentum with the visit of Jamieson Greer to India. Multiple high-level meetings between Goyal and Greer are scheduled to “advance” the bilateral trade deal, as confirmed by Sergio Gor.

These discussions are expected to play a decisive role in shaping the future of India-US trade relations.
Tariff Dispute at the Core
The talks are primarily focused on designing a new tariff architecture, following a significant ruling by the US Supreme Court on February 20, which invalidated an 18% reciprocal duty imposed on a large share of Indian goods.
Subsequently, the United States introduced a 10% uniform global tariff under Section 122 on February 24, applicable for up to 150 days without requiring congressional approval.

This temporary tariff regime, set to expire around July 24, has added urgency to the negotiations — although India has made it clear that it will not rush into an agreement.
Strategic Balancing Act
India’s approach reflects a careful balance — pushing for favorable terms while maintaining strategic patience. By not committing to strict timelines, New Delhi is signaling that quality of the deal matters more than speed.
What Lies Ahead
As discussions continue, the outcome of these negotiations could redefine trade ties between two of the world’s largest economies. A successful agreement may not only boost Indian exports but also reshape global supply chains.
For now, all eyes remain on the ongoing talks — and whether India and the US can bridge differences to unlock a mutually beneficial deal.
