External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held talks in Manila, where both sides indicated that an interim India-US trade deal is nearing completion.

The long-awaited India-US trade agreement appears to be entering its final phase, with the US State Department indicating that an interim deal is “almost ready” after high-level talks between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Manila.

The development comes at a crucial time for bilateral ties, as both nations seek to strengthen economic and strategic cooperation despite recent disagreements over tariffs, visa policies, and regional security issues.

Trade Deal Could Be Finalised Soon

According to the US State Department, both countries agreed that an interim trade agreement should be concluded at the earliest.

Officials described the negotiations as progressing positively, with discussions covering trade barriers, tariff-related issues, and broader economic cooperation.

The announcement has fuelled expectations that the agreement could soon provide greater market access for businesses in both countries while easing long-standing trade disputes.

Defence Cooperation Also on the Agenda

Apart from trade, Jaishankar and Rubio discussed pending defence agreements and ways to deepen strategic cooperation.

The US State Department noted that earlier conversations between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had emphasised the need to expedite key defence partnerships.

While officials did not disclose specific details of the proposed defence agreements, both sides reiterated their commitment to expanding cooperation in security and technology.

Focus on Energy, AI and Critical Minerals

Following the meeting, S. Jaishankar said the discussions extended beyond trade and covered several emerging sectors that are becoming increasingly important in the bilateral relationship.

These included:

  • Energy cooperation
  • Defence and security
  • Critical minerals
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Regional and global geopolitical developments

The two leaders also exchanged views on developments in West Asia, the Indo-Pacific, and other international issues of mutual interest.

Trade Ties Remain Crucial

The United States is India’s second-largest trading partner after China, making the proposed agreement one of the most significant economic negotiations between the two countries in recent years.

The expected framework aims to reduce reciprocal tariffs, improve market access for Indian exports in the American market, and create greater opportunities for US products and investments in India.

Analysts believe the deal could strengthen bilateral trade while reinforcing the broader strategic partnership between the world’s largest and oldest democracies.

Challenges Remain Despite Positive Momentum

India-US relations have experienced periods of strain over the past few years due to issues including US tariff measures, increased H-1B visa fees, and comments by President Donald Trump on India-Pakistan tensions.

India has consistently maintained that the ceasefire understanding with Pakistan was achieved through direct bilateral engagement.

Despite these differences, both governments have intensified diplomatic engagement in recent months.

The meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit is widely seen as helping revive momentum in bilateral relations.

With Washington now signalling that the interim trade agreement is nearing completion, both countries appear poised to take another significant step towards strengthening their economic and strategic partnership.
