Donald Trump and Narendra Modi during a meeting — a relationship marked by both diplomacy and personal warmth.

In an interesting behind-the-scenes revelation, Donald Trump once expressed confidence that Narendra Modi would be awake at 6 AM, casually remarking, “He will be up… he’s like me, he doesn’t sleep.”

The anecdote was shared by Sergio Gor, the US Ambassador to India, during his address at the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) Leadership Summit.

Recounting the moment, Gor said the incident took place backstage at a UFC event in Miami, Florida, earlier this year. Trump, moments before heading to the stage, suggested calling Prime Minister Modi.

When Gor reminded him that it was early morning in India, Trump responded without hesitation: “He will be up… he’s like me, he doesn’t sleep.”

Although the call didn’t happen immediately due to scheduling constraints, it was later planned for the following day. However, the story has since drawn attention for what it subtly reveals about the relationship between the two leaders.

According to Gor, the anecdote highlights a deeper, more personal connection. He remarked, “When you’re friends with somebody, not everything needs to be scheduled.”

This statement reflects a level of comfort and familiarity that goes beyond traditional diplomatic protocols.

Gor further emphasized that Trump holds India — and particularly Prime Minister Modi — in very high regard. He suggested that Trump’s approach to Modi differs from his interactions with many other global leaders.

“There are leaders we schedule things with because he does not consider them at the same level that he considers the Prime Minister,” Gor stated, hinting at a unique diplomatic equation.

The US envoy also noted that Trump continues to recall his visits to India fondly, describing them as filled with “warm memories.” He added that there remains a strong possibility of a future visit, something both nations may look forward to.

Beyond personal relations, Gor also touched upon the ongoing India-US trade deal, revealing that negotiations are nearing completion.

“Only the last one per cent remains,” he said, indicating that both countries are close to finalizing a major economic agreement.

The remarks come at a time when India-US relations continue to strengthen across multiple fronts — from trade and defense to strategic cooperation in global affairs.

While diplomacy often operates through structured channels, stories like these underline how personal chemistry between leaders can play a significant role in shaping international partnerships.
