BIG WIN, Says Trump, US Supreme Court Hands Him Sweeping Powers in Historic Ruling
Landmark 6-3 verdict allows US President to remove FTC officials over policy differences, overturning a 91-year-old precedent.
In a landmark decision that could reshape the balance of power in the United States government, the US Supreme Court has significantly expanded presidential authority, delivering a major legal victory to Donald Trump.
In a 6-3 ruling, the court held that the US President has the power to remove members of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over policy disagreements—marking a dramatic shift in how independent federal agencies operate.
The decision effectively overturns a 91-year-old precedent, altering long-standing protections that had shielded regulators from being dismissed at will.
Court Overturns Historic 1935 Judgment
At the heart of the case was Rebecca Slaughter, a Democratic FTC commissioner appointed during the tenure of Joe Biden. Trump had dismissed her in 2025, citing policy differences—a move challenged under existing law, which allowed removal only for reasons such as misconduct or inefficiency.
However, the Supreme Court ruled that such restrictions violate constitutional principles.
Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John Roberts stated that “the FTC’s for-cause removal provision violates the separation of powers.” He further emphasized that the commission’s role in enforcing laws falls squarely within the executive authority of the President.
The ruling formally overturns Humphrey’s Executor v. United States (1935)—a landmark judgment that had, for decades, safeguarded the independence of regulatory bodies.
A Shift in Power Dynamics
Legal experts believe the verdict represents one of the most significant expansions of presidential power in modern US history. By granting the President greater control over independent agencies, the decision strengthens the authority of the White House over key economic and regulatory institutions.
However, the court clarified that this ruling does not extend to all independent bodies. Notably, it stressed that the independence of the Federal Reserve remains unaffected.

The judgment also highlighted deep ideological divisions within the court, with the conservative majority backing Trump’s position while the three liberal justices dissented.
Trump Hails “BIG WIN”
Reacting swiftly to the verdict, Trump celebrated the outcome, calling it a historic victory.
Taking to social media, he described the decision as “a BIG WIN”, underscoring its importance for presidential authority and governance.

The ruling is expected to have far-reaching implications—not only for the current administration but also for future presidents, potentially redefining the structure and independence of federal agencies in the United States.
What Lies Ahead
As debates intensify over the implications of the verdict, the decision is likely to trigger further legal and political discussions about the limits of executive power.
While supporters argue it restores constitutional balance, critics warn it could weaken institutional independence and concentrate power in the executive branch.
For now, one thing is clear: this ruling marks a turning point in American governance, with consequences that could shape the country’s political landscape for years to come.
