Elon Musk Shares ‘Citizen Vigilante’ on X, Sparks Global Controversy Over Banned Film
Elon Musk faces backlash after sharing controversial film Citizen Vigilante on X, a movie accused of promoting anti-migrant violence.

In yet another move that has ignited global debate, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has found himself at the center of a growing controversy after sharing the full action film Citizen Vigilante on his social media platform X.

The film, directed by German filmmaker Uwe Boll, has already been facing heavy criticism across Europe, especially in Germany, where it was effectively blocked from theatrical release after authorities refused to grant it an age certification. According to Boll, regulators argued the film could be seen as inciting violence against migrants a decision the director slammed as outright censorship.

Originally released in US cinemas on June 19, the movie took a dramatic turn in its public reach when Boll announced he would make it available on X for just 48 hours. Soon after, Musk reshared the full 88-minute film to his massive audience of over 240 million followers, instantly catapulting it into mainstream attention.

What added more fuel to the fire was Musk’s active engagement with posts praising the movie. One viral post highlighted Citizen Vigilante as the No. 2 trending title on Apple TV, prompting Musk to tease fans by saying, “Citizen Vigilante 2 will be even better.” Boll later confirmed that a sequel is already planned for 2027.

The film stars Armie Hammer as an American expatriate in Europe who launches a brutal mission against criminal migrants and allegedly corrupt government officials. The plot has drawn severe criticism from film critics and political observers alike, with many accusing it of glorifying vigilante violence and xenophobia.

Entertainment magazine Variety described the protagonist as “xenophobic and entitled,” while other reviews labeled the film violent, chaotic, and morally troubling.

The controversy also comes at a delicate time for Hammer, whose acting career slowed dramatically after facing sexual assault allegations in 2021. Although Hammer denied the claims, prosecutors declined to file charges in 2023, making this film one of his most high-profile returns to the screen.

Critics argue Musk’s endorsement has dramatically amplified the film’s visibility, turning what was once a niche release into a viral flashpoint. Some analysts say this is a textbook example of the “Streisand Effect” where attempts to suppress content only end up making it more popular.

The situation has also reignited scrutiny over Musk’s repeated criticism of European immigration policies. Earlier this month, the Tesla and SpaceX chief faced backlash after amplifying anti-immigration content linked to unrest in Belfast, with watchdog groups accusing him of boosting divisive narratives.

As debates over free speech, censorship, and platform responsibility continue, Citizen Vigilante has become much more than just a movie it’s now part of a much larger political and cultural battle.
