Shreyas Iyer Captaincy Debut: Rohit Sharma Overtaken, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Misses Out
Shreyas Iyer leads India as T20I captain for the first time in Belfast, marking a new leadership era while Vaibhav Sooryavanshi misses debut.

Belfast: Indian cricket witnessed a fresh leadership chapter as Shreyas Iyer officially stepped in as India’s new T20I captain, taking charge in the opening match of the two-game series against Ireland. In doing so, Iyer became the 15th player to captain India in T20 Internationals, marking a significant moment in the team’s evolving leadership landscape.

The 31-year-old’s debut as skipper was marked by confidence right from the toss, where he chose to field first—signalling a calm, tactical approach to his new role.

A comeback with a captaincy twist

Iyer’s return to T20I cricket has been anything but ordinary. His last appearance came in December 2023, when he finished as India’s leading run-scorer in a series against Australia. At that time, India’s T20 setup looked very different, with players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Avesh Khan forming part of the core.

Fast forward to 2026, and the script has flipped completely—this time, Iyer is not just back in the XI, but leading it.

Speaking on his leadership philosophy, Iyer kept things simple:

“You don’t have to complicate things. Stay in the present and enjoy the game—that’s all that matters.”

Rohit Sharma overtaken in captaincy age record

One of the most talked-about details from this match is statistical rather than tactical. At 31 years and 202 days, Iyer has now surpassed Rohit Sharma in terms of age at the time of first T20I captaincy.

This places him third on the list of oldest India T20I captains at debut:

  • Shikhar Dhawan – 35
  • Suryakumar Yadav – 33
  • Shreyas Iyer – 31
  • Rohit Sharma – 30
  • KL Rahul – 30

The milestone adds an interesting layer to India’s evolving leadership story, where experience is now blending with new-generation tactical thinking.

India’s long list of T20I captains grows again

With Iyer’s appointment, India’s T20I captaincy chart continues to expand rapidly. Over the years, the role has been rotated across several big names, including:

MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul, and Suryakumar Yadav, among others.

Iyer now joins this elite but constantly rotating group, underlining India’s experimental and depth-driven approach in the shortest format.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi misses debut despite huge hype

While Iyer’s captaincy made headlines, another storyline quietly unfolded on the sidelines.

Teen sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who at just 15 became the youngest player selected for the series, was not included in the playing XI for the first T20I.

Sooryavanshi had been widely expected to make his debut following his explosive performances in IPL 2026, but team management opted for caution, delaying his international introduction.

His absence has sparked discussion among fans, especially given the growing trend of fast-tracking young talent in Indian cricket.

A new phase for Indian T20 cricket?

Iyer’s appointment signals more than just a captaincy change—it reflects India’s ongoing transition phase in T20 cricket. With senior players gradually rotating out and younger names stepping in, the team is clearly building a broader leadership pool.

However, the real challenge will be consistency—something India has struggled with in terms of long-term captaincy stability in the shortest format.
