‘Not Really Surprised’: Ambati Rayudu Explains India’s Shock Ireland Defeat, Points to IPL Hangover

India’s shocking 0-2 T20I series defeat against Ireland has triggered intense debate across the cricketing world, but former India batter Ambati Rayudu believes the result was not as surprising as many are making it out to be.

Speaking after India’s narrow one-run defeat in the second T20I in Belfast, Rayudu admitted that the team’s struggles were largely due to their inability to adjust quickly to unfamiliar playing conditions.

“No, I’m not really surprised,” Rayudu said, explaining that India’s transition from the batting-friendly pitches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to the slower, two-paced wickets in Ireland was always going to be challenging.

According to Rayudu, the Indian batting lineup looked uncomfortable on surfaces that demanded patience and controlled strokeplay rather than aggressive power-hitting.

He pointed out that many of the players are now heavily accustomed to flat IPL tracks where fast bat-swings dominate, but conditions in Ireland exposed a lack of adaptability.

The former India batter said that controlling the downswing and playing the “in-between game” has become a concern for several batters when faced with lateral movement and spongy pitches.

Rayudu also turned his attention to Tilak Varma, who scored a fighting half-century in the second match but still had technical flaws exposed.

While praising Tilak’s temperament, Rayudu highlighted that the left-hander has struggled against slow bowling on sluggish tracks for some time.

He explained that Tilak often prefers targeting square boundaries instead of using his feet against spinners, which limits his options in difficult conditions.

Rayudu added that developing conventional attacking shots like sweeping and better footwork against spin could significantly improve Tilak’s strike rotation and tempo.

The former Chennai Super Kings star also addressed the growing calls for teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to make his international debut.

With fans demanding a chance for the 15-year-old after India’s defeats, Rayudu urged patience and backed the management’s decision to stick with experienced openers.

He said the youngster is already gaining valuable exposure by being part of the dressing room and learning the demands of international cricket.

Rayudu stressed that rushing him into a bilateral series after a couple of losses would not necessarily be the right move.

Despite the disappointing series in Ireland, Rayudu remains optimistic about India’s next challenge — a five-match T20I series in England.

He believes the batting-friendly English wickets will suit India far better and expects the team to bounce back strongly.

With questions now being raised over India’s adaptability outside subcontinent conditions, the England series could prove to be an important test ahead of future ICC tournaments.
