Shreyas Iyer Joins Unwanted India Captaincy List After Ireland Shock… A Record Previously Held Only by Rishabh Pant
India’s disappointing T20I series defeat to Ireland has left Shreyas Iyer with an unwanted record, making him only the second Indian captain to lose his first two T20Is in charge.
A Historic Opportunity Turns Into an Unwanted Record
What was expected to be a promising start to Shreyas Iyer’s T20I captaincy journey has instead ended with an unfortunate entry into the record books.
The Mumbai batter led India in the two-match T20I series against Ireland in Belfast in June 2026. However, the series did not go according to plan as the hosts stunned the visitors with victories in both matches.
Ireland first defeated India by 34 runs in the opening T20I before edging out the Men in Blue by a dramatic one-run margin in the second match. The consecutive defeats handed Ireland a historic series victory and left Iyer facing intense scrutiny.
Only the Second Indian Captain to Suffer This Fate
With the back-to-back losses, Shreyas Iyer has become only the second Indian captain in men’s T20I cricket to lose each of his first two matches in charge.
The only other Indian captain to experience a similar start was Rishabh Pant, who led India during the home T20I series against South Africa in June 2022. Pant’s team also lost the first two matches of that series before recovering later.

For Iyer, the statistic is particularly surprising given his impressive leadership credentials in franchise cricket. He remains the only captain in IPL history to guide three different franchises to the tournament final, earning a reputation as one of India’s most respected young leaders.
A Tough Series With the Bat
The disappointing captaincy debut was compounded by Iyer’s struggles with the bat.
Batting at crucial stages in both matches, the right-hander failed to make a significant impact. He scored just three runs from seven deliveries in the first T20I and followed it up with 10 runs off seven balls in the second encounter.
As one of India’s most experienced middle-order batters, expectations were high, but the series proved challenging both personally and collectively.
Ireland Create History Against India
While the spotlight has largely been on India’s struggles, the series belonged to an inspired Irish side.

The victory in the first T20I marked Ireland’s first-ever win over India in international cricket. The second success not only sealed the series but also delivered another major milestone.
It was the first time Ireland had won a T20I series against India, underlining the growing competitiveness of the Irish cricket team on the global stage.
End of a Remarkable Winning Streak
The defeat carried even greater significance for Indian cricket.
India entered the series with a remarkable run of 16 consecutive T20I series victories, one of the longest streaks in the format. Ireland’s triumph brought that impressive sequence to an end and served as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket.
For Shreyas Iyer, the series may have begun with dreams of a perfect captaincy start, but it ended with lessons that could shape his leadership journey in the years ahead.
As India regroups after a rare setback, attention will now turn to how Iyer and the team respond to one of the most surprising T20I series defeats in recent memory.
