Unwanted Record!: Samson & Abhishek Become First Indian Openers to Fall for Golden Ducks in Same T20I
Ireland pacer Jai Moondra scripts dream over as India’s top order collapses early in Belfast
In a shocking turn of events, India’s opening pair Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma created an unwanted record during the second T20I against Ireland national cricket team in Belfast.
The duo became the first Indian opening pair in men’s T20Is to be dismissed for golden ducks in the same innings, leaving fans stunned and the team under early pressure.
A Nightmare Start for India
The drama unfolded in the very first over bowled by Ireland’s Rajasthan-born pacer Jai Moondra:
- First ball: Samson trapped LBW for a golden duck
- Same over: Abhishek Sharma dismissed for a first-ball duck
Samson attempted a flick but missed a sharp incoming delivery, and even DRS confirmed the dismissal with “three reds”. Shortly after, Abhishek mistimed a short ball, resulting in a top edge.
A brilliant juggling catch by Matthew Hollard sealed Abhishek’s fate, completing a dream start for Ireland.
Rare and Unwanted Record
This is the first instance in Indian T20I history where both openers have fallen for golden ducks in the same match.
Globally, such incidents are extremely rare. The only other similar case in men’s T20Is was when Bangladesh’s Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar were dismissed for golden ducks against West Indies in 2018.
India has seen openers dismissed for ducks before:
- Rohit Sharma & Ajinkya Rahane vs Pakistan (2016)
- Shubman Gill & Yashasvi Jaiswal vs South Africa (2023)
However, both being dismissed on the very first ball makes this incident unique—and unfortunate.
Pressure Mounts on India’s Top Order
After the early collapse, Ishan Kishan managed to get India off the mark, but the damage had already been done.

The performance has raised serious questions about India’s opening combination, especially against a comparatively weaker opposition.
Is It Time for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi?
The spotlight now shifts to young talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who is part of the squad but yet to make his debut.
Despite management backing Samson and Abhishek earlier, their struggles could force a rethink ahead of the upcoming England tour.

“One bad innings can be forgiven… but repeated failures open the door for new talent.”
Final Take
Cricket is a game of uncertainties, and this match proved it once again. While Ireland celebrated a dream start, India was left searching for answers after an embarrassing record.
“From the very first ball, the game slipped away — and history was written for all the wrong reasons.”
