Piyush Goyal Files FIR Over AI Deepfake Video, Warns of Strict Action as Social Media Links Are Removed
The Union Minister alleges his remarks were manipulated using artificial intelligence to spread misinformation, while authorities intensify action against fake videos circulating online.
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has filed a police complaint after an AI-generated deepfake video allegedly altered his remarks made outside Parliament and circulated them on social media.
Sharing the development on X, the minister said the manipulated clip was created to spread misinformation and confirmed that an FIR (No. 123/26) was registered at Chanakyapuri Police Station in New Delhi during the early hours of July 25, 2026.“My remarks to the media outside Parliament have been maliciously doctored using AI to create and circulate a deepfake video in an attempt to spread misinformation,” Goyal wrote.
He added that strict legal action would be taken against those responsible for creating, sharing, or amplifying the fake content.
Minister Warns Against Misuse of Artificial Intelligence
Expressing concern over the growing misuse of artificial intelligence, Goyal said the irresponsible use of AI to mislead the public would not be tolerated.
He urged citizens to rely only on verified and authentic sources while consuming news and information online.
The minister also expressed confidence that India’s digitally aware citizens, particularly the younger generation, would not fall victim to misinformation campaigns.
Social Media Links Reportedly Removed
According to government sources, several social media links containing or promoting the alleged deepfake video have already been taken down.
The action comes as authorities continue monitoring misleading content related to recent political developments and student protests.
PIB Fact Check Flags Manipulated Videos
Earlier, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check unit had also warned about AI-generated videos allegedly being circulated by Pakistani propaganda accounts.
According to the PIB, one manipulated clip falsely portrayed Piyush Goyal making threatening remarks about protesting students. The fact-checking agency stated that the statements shown in the viral video were fabricated and did not reflect the minister’s actual comments.
The PIB also flagged another AI-generated deepfake involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming that the viral video contained fabricated statements regarding government action on examination paper leaks.
Officials urged the public not to trust or share such altered videos without verification.
Original Statement Focused on Action Against Paper Leaks
On July 24, Piyush Goyal had addressed the media regarding the government’s response to examination paper leaks.
He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured the country that the strictest possible action would be taken against those responsible for such offences.
Goyal stated that the government planned to establish fast-track courts to ensure speedy trials in paper leak cases and promised additional measures aimed at protecting students and strengthening the examination system.

He also appealed to opposition parties to participate in discussions on the issue instead of politicising it, stressing the importance of working together to find solutions for the country’s youth.
Deepfakes Surface Amid Student Protests
The manipulated videos emerged during ongoing student protests at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, where demonstrators have been raising concerns over alleged irregularities in NEET and other competitive examinations.
Among the protesters’ demands are reforms to the education system and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the paper leak controversy.
The demonstrations have generated significant activity across social media platforms, prompting authorities to repeatedly caution users against believing or sharing unverified AI-generated content.
Growing Concern Over AI Misinformation
The latest incident highlights the increasing challenge posed by AI-generated deepfakes, which can convincingly manipulate speeches, videos, and public statements.
As artificial intelligence tools become more sophisticated, government agencies and cybersecurity experts continue to stress the importance of verifying information through official channels before sharing it online.
The case is expected to remain under investigation, while authorities pursue legal action against those involved in creating and distributing the alleged fake videos.
