Who Is George Kurian? Veteran BJP Leader Resigns as Union Minister After Rajya Sabha Term Ends

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader George Kurian has stepped down from his role as Union Minister of State (MoS) for Minority Affairs and Fisheries following the completion of his Rajya Sabha term.

The resignation was formally accepted by Droupadi Murmu, as confirmed in an official statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Resignation Accepted with Immediate Effect

According to the statement, the President approved the resignation “with immediate effect, under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution”, acting on the advice of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Kurian’s exit comes as his six-year tenure in the Rajya Sabha came to an end, making it mandatory for him to vacate his ministerial position.

Who Is George Kurian?

George Kurian, 65, is a seasoned politician and one of the early members of the BJP, having been associated with the party since its formation in 1980. Over the decades, he has built a reputation as a dedicated party worker and an experienced administrator.

Kurian was part of the third Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where he served as Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Fisheries since August 2024. During his tenure, he was involved in policy matters concerning minority welfare and fisheries development.

In a related development, Ravneet Singh Bittu, whose Rajya Sabha term is also ending, was not renominated for the recent elections held on June 18, indicating a broader reshuffle within the party’s parliamentary lineup.
