A shocking incident from Chhattisgarh’s Koriya district has sent waves of outrage across the state after BJP leader Bharat Singh, popularly known as Lalla Singh, was allegedly burnt alive inside his Fortuner SUV following a violent confrontation linked to a long-standing sand mining dispute.

The horrifying attack, which took place late Tuesday night in Naugain village under Sonhat police station limits, also claimed the lives of Virendra Singh and Nagendra Singh, while another victim, Mayank Singh, remains in critical condition with severe injuries.

Authorities have arrested four accused in connection with the case, while efforts continue to trace several others allegedly involved in the incident.

How the Incident Unfolded

According to preliminary investigations and allegations made by the victim’s family, Bharat Singh had gone to the area to discuss a settlement over an ongoing conflict related to sand quarry operations.

Instead of negotiations, investigators believe the meeting escalated into violence. Reports suggest that the SUV carrying Bharat Singh and his associates was allegedly blocked by trucks positioned at both ends, leaving no room for escape.

The vehicle was then reportedly set on fire, trapping its occupants inside. Bharat Singh died at the scene, while two others later succumbed to their injuries.

Police officials say the exact sequence of events and the cause of the fire are still being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.

The Background: A Bitter Battle Over Sand Mining

Local sources claim the roots of the conflict lie in control over lucrative sand mining operations in several areas, including Sonhat, Kailashpur, Telimuda, Beliya, and Chhingura.

The quarry contract was reportedly associated with Bharat Singh’s family, while another influential local faction allegedly controlled transportation through tipper trucks.

Disagreements over mining rights, transportation, and alleged illegal collections are believed to have intensified over the past several months, creating deep tensions between rival groups.

Officials have also confirmed that previous complaints and criminal cases linked to the dispute had already been registered.

Police have registered a case against nine named accused under serious sections, including murder and attempted murder.

Those arrested so far include Akshat Tripathi, Vishal Tripathi, Satyaprakash Tripathi, and Mannu Tripathi, while several other suspects remain absconding.

The victim’s family has demanded a CBI investigation, alleging that the attack was carefully planned rather than a spontaneous clash.

The incident has triggered widespread political reactions across Chhattisgarh.

Local MLA Bhaiyalal Rajwade expressed grief over the killings, describing the incident as one of the most horrifying episodes witnessed in the history of Koriya district. He said the investigation would reveal how the dispute escalated to such an extreme level.

Former MLA Gulab Kamro also condemned the violence and demanded exemplary action against those responsible.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said the government has taken serious note of the incident. He confirmed that arrests have already been made and assured that the investigation would proceed without bias, adding that no guilty person would be spared.
