‘Massive Joke, Politically Immature’: DMK’s Explosive Attack on Rahul Gandhi Reveals Deep INDIA Bloc Rift
The war of words between the DMK and Congress has intensified after Tamil Nadu’s principal opposition party accused Rahul Gandhi of abandoning allies and then preaching unity within the INDIA alliance.
Chennai/New Delhi: The political relationship between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Congress Party appears to have hit a new low, with the DMK launching one of its sharpest attacks yet on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
In a series of strongly-worded remarks, the Tamil Nadu-based party accused the Congress of betraying a long-standing ally and questioned Rahul Gandhi’s credibility on the issue of opposition unity.
The criticism comes amid growing tensions within the broader INDIA bloc, where disagreements over alliances, leadership and electoral strategies have increasingly surfaced in public.
DMK’s Sharpest Criticism Yet
The controversy began after DMK’s IT Cell posted a strongly critical message on social media, alleging that the party had supported Congress during difficult political periods only to be abandoned when circumstances changed.
The post accused Congress of leaving an alliance that had stood by it and claimed the party had shifted its loyalties at the first available opportunity.
In a particularly sharp remark, the DMK described Rahul Gandhi as a “massive joke” and accused him of displaying political immaturity by speaking about unity after allegedly contributing to divisions within opposition ranks.
The statement quickly gained attention online and sparked reactions from political observers across the country.
Murasoli Editorial Raises Questions
The attack was not limited to social media.
Murasoli, the official publication associated with the DMK, also published a strongly-worded editorial targeting Rahul Gandhi’s recent comments at an INDIA bloc meeting.
The editorial questioned whether the Congress leader was in a position to advise opposition parties on unity, arguing that several alliance-related disputes across states had emerged under Congress’ watch.
The publication described Gandhi’s emphasis on coalition solidarity as a case of “belated enlightenment” and suggested that opposition partners had legitimate concerns about the Congress party’s approach to alliance politics.
Alliance Politics Under Scrutiny
The latest confrontation comes against the backdrop of significant political realignments in Tamil Nadu.
According to DMK leaders, Congress’ decision to leave the DMK-led alliance and align itself with the ruling TVK has fundamentally altered the state’s political landscape.
Party leaders argue that the move represented a betrayal of a long-standing partnership and has damaged trust between the two parties.
The fallout has also fueled wider discussions about the future direction of opposition politics ahead of upcoming electoral battles.

Questions Over the Future of INDIA Bloc
The DMK’s criticism also highlighted concerns regarding the future of the INDIA alliance.
Party leaders referred to discussions within opposition circles where questions were reportedly raised about whether the alliance could continue effectively in its current form.
According to reports cited by DMK leaders, some opposition figures expressed concern that the departure of key regional players had weakened the coalition’s political strength and electoral reach.
The remarks indicate growing unease among several opposition parties about maintaining cohesion in a coalition that was originally formed to present a united challenge against the BJP.
Rahul Gandhi Under Fresh Pressure

For Rahul Gandhi, the controversy adds another layer of complexity to his efforts to position the Congress as a central force within the opposition ecosystem.
While Congress leaders continue to emphasize the importance of unity among anti-BJP parties, criticism from former allies highlights the challenges of balancing national ambitions with regional political realities.
Political analysts note that maintaining strong relationships with regional parties has become increasingly important in India’s coalition-driven political environment.
A Rift That Could Have National Implications
The public exchange between the DMK and Congress is more than a state-level disagreement. It reflects broader tensions within opposition politics at a time when coalition management is becoming increasingly critical.
Whether the differences can be resolved through dialogue remains uncertain. For now, the sharp language used by DMK leaders suggests that wounds from recent political developments remain fresh.
As opposition parties prepare for future electoral contests, the spotlight will remain firmly on whether leaders can rebuild trust—or whether the cracks within the alliance will continue to widen.
