Prakash Raj Faces Legal Trouble Over ‘North Indian Invasion’ Remark on Ramayana: Tirupati Court Asked to Act
A complaint filed by a TTD Trust Board member alleges that the actor’s comments on Lord Rama, Lakshmana and the Ramayana hurt religious sentiments and promoted regional divisions.
Tirupati: Veteran actor Prakash Raj has landed in fresh legal controversy after a criminal complaint was filed against him in a court in Tirupati, accusing him of making remarks that allegedly insult Hindu religious beliefs and promote regional discord.
The complaint, submitted before the IV Additional Judicial Magistrate of First Class, seeks legal action against the actor over statements he allegedly made during a public event earlier this year.
The case has once again placed Prakash Raj at the center of a heated debate involving religion, culture, free speech and political discourse.
What Triggered the Complaint?
The complaint was filed by G. Bhanuprakash Reddy, a BJP leader and member of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Trust Board.
According to Reddy, he had earlier approached law enforcement authorities and also issued a legal notice to the actor. However, after no action was reportedly taken, he decided to move the court directly.
The complainant argued that the actor’s statements caused widespread anger and hurt among members of the Hindu community.
The Controversial Remarks
The dispute stems from comments allegedly made by Prakash Raj during the Kerala Literature Festival earlier this year.
According to the petition, a video clip of the actor’s remarks later circulated on social media and drew criticism from several groups.
The complaint alleges that Prakash Raj referred to the journey of Lord Rama and Lakshmana towards Lanka as a form of “North Indian invasion” into the South. The complainant has described the remarks as factually incorrect, inflammatory and disrespectful to one of Hinduism’s most revered epics.
The petition further claims that the actor’s comments misrepresented the narrative of the Ramayana and offended religious sentiments.
Allegations of Promoting Division
Beyond religious concerns, the complaint also accuses Prakash Raj of encouraging divisive narratives.
According to the petitioner, the actor’s remarks allegedly promoted the controversial Aryan-Dravidian theory, which critics argue has often been used to create regional and cultural divisions.
The complaint states that such statements could potentially fuel hostility between different communities and undermine India’s cultural unity.
Supporters of the complaint argue that public figures must exercise caution while discussing religious texts and historical narratives because of their influence on public opinion.

Sections Invoked in the Complaint
The petition reportedly invokes provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Among the sections cited is Section 299, which deals with deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings by insulting religious beliefs.
The complaint also refers to Section 196, which addresses actions that may promote enmity between different groups on grounds such as religion, race, place of birth or residence and acts that could disturb social harmony.
The court is expected to examine the complaint and determine the next course of action in the matter.
A Familiar Figure in Public Debates

Prakash Raj has often found himself at the center of political and social discussions due to his outspoken views on a range of national issues.
The actor has frequently commented on governance, social justice, secularism and freedom of expression, earning both strong support and sharp criticism from different sections of society.
This latest controversy is likely to intensify discussions surrounding the balance between freedom of speech and respect for religious sentiments.
What Happens Next?
With the matter now before a judicial forum, attention will shift to the court’s response and whether any further legal proceedings are initiated against the actor.
For now, the complaint has reignited a wider debate over how historical and religious narratives are interpreted in public discourse and the responsibilities that come with being a public figure.
As reactions continue to pour in from political leaders, religious groups and civil society, the controversy surrounding Prakash Raj’s remarks is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
