TMC MP Mahua Moitra has approached the Calcutta High Court seeking police protection over alleged repeated egg-pelting incidents during public appearances.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra has approached the Calcutta High Court, seeking police protection after alleging that eggs are being repeatedly hurled at her during public appearances.

The matter came up for hearing before the High Court on Thursday, where the court scheduled the next hearing for July 29 after hearing preliminary submissions from both sides.

Moitra Seeks Protection from Alleged Attacks

Appearing for Mahua Moitra, senior advocate and TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee told the court that the Krishnanagar MP has been facing repeated incidents of egg-pelting whenever she attends public events.

According to the petition, despite informing the police about these incidents, adequate preventive action has allegedly not been taken.

Banerjee argued that the repeated attacks were not only humiliating but were also affecting Moitra’s ability to perform her responsibilities as an elected Member of Parliament.

Reference to Earlier Court Order

During the hearing, Banerjee also informed the court that there had been an earlier direction from the Calcutta High Court asking police authorities to prevent such incidents.

He submitted that, despite the previous order, similar incidents were allegedly continuing.

The counsel further stated that an FIR had already been registered in connection with the matter.

State Seeks More Time

Representing the state authorities, government counsel requested additional time before responding to the allegations.

Accepting the request, Justice Bhattacharyya adjourned the matter and fixed July 29 as the next date of hearing.

The court is expected to consider the plea for additional security measures during the next hearing.

Political Significance

Mahua Moitra, a prominent Trinamool Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP from Krishnanagar, has frequently been at the centre of political debates and public attention.

The latest petition comes amid her claim that repeated acts of intimidation are hampering her ability to carry out official duties and interact freely with the public.

The High Court is now set to hear the matter in detail next week.
