Hrithik Roshan agrees with filmmaker’s ‘stardom over cinema’ debate: ‘Somehow we haven’t grown up’

Mumbai: Hrithik Roshan has sparked a conversation on social media after supporting filmmaker Pratim D Gupta’s views on the growing obsession with film stars over the craft of cinema itself.

The discussion began when Pratim shared a detailed note on Instagram, expressing disappointment over how Mani Ratnam’s return to Kolkata for a film shoot received far less public attention than the presence of actors Vijay Sethupathi and Sai Pallavi, who are also shooting in the city.

In his post, Pratim argued that Indian audiences often celebrate celebrity appearances more than the creative minds behind filmmaking. He pointed out that while thousands gathered to catch a glimpse of stars, very few recognised that acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam was shooting in Kolkata for the first time since Yuva.

The filmmaker also highlighted another overlooked milestone — three-time National Award-winning cinematographer Avik Mukhopadhyay collaborating with Mani Ratnam on a Tamil film for the first time.

According to Pratim, the issue extends beyond media coverage and reflects a broader cultural mindset where visibility has become more valuable than artistic contribution.

He wrote that society has created a hierarchy in which celebrity sightings dominate headlines, while directors, writers, cinematographers, and other creators responsible for bringing stories to life rarely receive the same recognition.

The filmmaker concluded his post by saying that cinema is bigger than stardom, warning that if audiences continue to celebrate only celebrities, the appreciation for filmmaking itself could gradually diminish.

Reacting to the post, Hrithik Roshan expressed complete agreement with Pratim’s perspective.

The actor commented, “Somehow we haven’t grown up.”
