The Iranian government has announced a five-day state funeral programme for former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, whose burial in Mashhad is scheduled for July 9 amid a historic political transition.
Iran Reveals Funeral Schedule For Ali Khamenei, Burial Set For July 9 In Holy City Of Mashhad
More than four months after the death of Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iranian authorities have officially unveiled the schedule for his state funeral ceremonies. The announcement marks the beginning of what is expected to be one of the most significant national commemorations in the country’s recent history.
According to details released by the Committee for the Commemoration of the Ascension of the Mujahid Martyr Imam, a series of ceremonies will take place across Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad before Khamenei is finally laid to rest on July 9, 2026.
Five-Day National Farewell Planned
The farewell programme will begin with public ceremonies at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla in Tehran on July 4 and July 5. Thousands of supporters, religious leaders, and political figures are expected to gather to pay their final respects.
A major funeral procession is scheduled to move through the streets of Tehran on July 6, followed by another ceremonial procession in the religious city of Qom on July 7.
The final stage of the journey will take place in Mashhad, one of Iran’s holiest cities, where Khamenei will be buried on July 9 at the revered Imam Reza Shrine. The date coincides with the eve of the martyrdom of Imam Sajjad, adding religious significance to the event.

Family Members To Be Buried Alongside Him
Iranian officials also confirmed that four members of Khamenei’s family, who were reportedly killed alongside him, will be buried during the same ceremonies.
The family members named by authorities include Dr. Misbah al-Huda Baqeri Kani, Sayyida Bushra Hosseini Khamenei, Zahra Haddad Adel, and Zahra Mohammadi Golpayegani.
Why Was The Funeral Delayed?
Khamenei, who led the Islamic Republic for 35 years following the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989, was 86 years old at the time of his death.
A state funeral had initially been planned for early March. However, officials postponed the event as regional tensions intensified and military developments continued to unfold.

Political analysts believe the repeated delays were influenced not only by security concerns but also by broader developments, including Iran’s leadership transition and ongoing diplomatic discussions involving major global powers.
A Defining Moment In Iran’s Modern History
For millions of Iranians, the funeral ceremonies will mark the end of an era that shaped the country’s political and religious identity for more than three decades.
The upcoming events are expected to attract massive public participation and international attention as Iran prepares to bid farewell to one of the most influential figures in its modern history.
Authorities have indicated that additional details regarding security arrangements, foreign delegations, and public participation guidelines will be released in the coming weeks.
