Comedian Pranit More in Legal Trouble Over ‘₹370 Biryani’ Joke, Viral Clip Sparks Outrage, Cyber Police Step In

A controversy surrounding stand-up comedy has taken a serious legal turn, as the Maharashtra Cyber Police registered a case against comedian Pranit More over a viral clip from his show featuring the now-infamous “₹370 biryani” remark.

The incident, which has triggered widespread outrage on social media, involves a man in the audience claiming that after spending ₹370 on biryani during a date, he deserved a “return on his investment”. The man was later identified as Himanshu Jangra, who allegedly shared private details of his date publicly during the show.

What has further fueled criticism is that More, along with the audience, was seen laughing during the exchange and did not intervene when the comments were made. Many social media users, particularly women, called out the comedian for allowing such remarks to go unchecked on a public platform.

As the backlash intensified, More issued a public apology, stating “comments made by the audience member do not reflect my views”. However, critics argued that his response came too late and questioned his responsibility as a performer to moderate content during live shows.

The controversy has also had consequences for Jangra, who reportedly lost his job at a Gurugram-based firm following the incident, according to reports.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognisance of the matter and summoned both More and Jangra. The commission raised serious concerns over the nature of the remarks, stating they appeared to “glorify sexual coercion and non-consensual conduct towards a woman”.

NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has also written to the Haryana Director General of Police, seeking immediate and time-bound action and an Action Taken Report within seven days.

In its official statement, the commission warned that “normalisation or glorification of behaviour that undermines a woman’s consent, dignity and bodily autonomy has far-reaching consequences” for society.

Authorities have now sought detailed information regarding the registration of an FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with actions taken against those involved. The probe will also examine the authenticity of the viral video and the role of organisers, performers, and venue management.

As investigations continue, the case has reignited debates around the limits of comedy, accountability of performers, and the growing scrutiny of content in the digital age.
