Varun Dhawan’s ‘Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’ Slows Down at Box Office, Stuck at ₹36 Crore in Week One
David Dhawan’s comedy struggles to cross ₹40 crore mark despite decent opening weekend
The box office run of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai appears to have hit a plateau, as the film struggles to maintain momentum after its first week in theatres.
Directed by David Dhawan and starring Varun Dhawan alongside Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur, the comedy entertainer has collected around ₹36.34 crore in India after seven days.
Weekday slowdown stalls growth
According to trade estimates, the film earned approximately ₹2.19 crore on Day 7 (Thursday), reflecting a clear slowdown in collections. The movie opened with ₹7.50 crore on Day 1 and maintained similar numbers on Saturday, before peaking at ₹9 crore on Sunday.
However, the expected weekday drop significantly impacted its overall performance. The film collected ₹3.50 crore on Monday, saw a slight rise to ₹3.85 crore on Tuesday, but dipped again to ₹2.80 crore on Wednesday, eventually settling at the current total.
Despite a promising weekend, the film has failed to sustain audience interest during the weekdays, keeping it below the ₹40 crore milestone.
Comparison with Varun Dhawan’s recent films
In comparison, Varun Dhawan’s previous release Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari performed slightly better, earning ₹38.85 crore in its first week. However, the current film has managed to outperform his earlier project Baby John, which collected ₹32.65 crore during the same period.

Facing tough box office competition
The film is also battling strong competition from other releases, including Peddi and Bandar, both of which are competing for audience attention and screen space.
About the film
Produced by Ramesh Taurani under Tips Films, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is a chaotic comedy revolving around relationships, marriage, and unexpected twists.

The story follows Jass (Varun Dhawan), whose wife Bani (Mrunal Thakur) asks for a divorce due to incompatibility in their personal life. As Jass moves on with Preet (Pooja Hegde), the situation spirals into chaos when both women end up pregnant, leading to a series of comic complications.
The film also features Mouni Roy, Rakesh Bedi, Rajesh Kumar, and Maniesh Paul in supporting roles.
What’s next?
With collections slowing down, the coming weekend will be crucial for the film to regain momentum. Otherwise, it risks ending its theatrical run as an average performer at the box office.
