Gold Ring for Every Newborn? Tamil Nadu Govt’s Big ‘TVK Promise’ Set to Roll Out on Sept 15,
Under the ‘Thaaimaaman Thanga Mothira Thittam’, babies born in government hospitals will receive a one-gram gold ring as part of a ₹755 crore welfare push.
The Tamil Nadu government has announced a unique scheme to gift one-gram gold rings to newborns, fulfilling a key poll promise made by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
The initiative, titled ‘Thaaimaaman Thanga Mothira Thittam’, will be officially launched on September 15, 2026, by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, coinciding with the birth anniversary of former CM C N Annadurai, popularly known as Perarignar Anna.
Who Will Benefit?
According to the official announcement:
- The scheme will apply to children born on or after June 22, 2026
- Only those born in government hospitals are eligible
- Families must have permanent residence in Tamil Nadu
The goal is not just to provide a gift, but to encourage institutional deliveries and strengthen trust in public healthcare.
₹755 Crore Allocation
The state government has earmarked a substantial ₹755.83 crore for the implementation of this scheme, underlining its commitment to maternal and child welfare.
Officials highlighted that the programme is part of a broader effort that includes:
- Financial assistance for pregnant women
- Free delivery and newborn care services
- Emergency obstetric care
- Nutritional support initiatives
Rooted in Tradition
The scheme draws inspiration from the Tamil cultural practice of ‘Thaaimaman Seer’—a tradition where the maternal uncle gifts gold and other items to bless a newborn.

By institutionalising this custom, the government aims to “celebrate the joy and significance of motherhood” while promoting safer childbirth practices.

Boosting Public Healthcare Confidence
Authorities believe that the gold ring scheme will serve as an incentive for families to opt for government healthcare facilities, thereby improving maternal and infant health indicators.
“The government places the highest priority on improving maternal and child welfare,” the official statement emphasised.
A Welfare Move with Political Significance
Beyond its social impact, the initiative is also being viewed through a political lens, as it fulfills a major electoral promise by TVK.
Will this gold-backed welfare scheme redefine public healthcare participation in Tamil Nadu? The coming months may provide the answer.
