Vijay’s Karur Decision Sparks Political Storm: Government Jobs for Stampede Victims Trigger Backlash Ahead of Tamil Nadu Bypolls
As Tamil Nadu prepares for crucial Assembly bypolls, Chief Minister Vijay faces mounting criticism over his government’s decision to provide jobs to families of Karur stampede victims, while the Madras High Court and pending election petitions add fresh uncertainty to the political landscape.
Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has found himself at the center of a fresh political controversy after his government’s decision to offer government jobs to the families of victims who lost their lives in the Karur stampede drew criticism from opposition parties, legal experts, and even allies supporting his administration.
The development comes at a crucial time, with the state preparing for a series of Assembly bypolls that are expected to be the first major political test for Vijay and his Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) government.
Karur Decision Becomes Political Flashpoint
The controversy stems from the tragic stampede that occurred during a TVK political rally in Karur, where 41 people lost their lives last year. During his recent visit to Karur—his first since assuming office as Chief Minister—Vijay handed over appointment letters for government jobs to family members of the deceased.
While the move was presented as a humanitarian gesture, it quickly became the subject of intense political debate.
Critics argue that since the tragedy took place during a political event organized by TVK, the responsibility of compensating victims should have rested with the party rather than the state government. They believe the decision creates an uncomfortable precedent by shifting a political party’s responsibility onto public resources.
Allies Raise Questions
Interestingly, criticism has not been limited to opposition parties.
Leaders from the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist)—both of which extend outside support to the TVK government—have openly questioned the decision.
They argued that using government employment as compensation for a tragedy linked to a private political event could blur administrative boundaries and weaken accountability.
Several leaders also expressed concern that the decision might affect the ongoing legal proceedings related to the stampede.
High Court Allows Jobs, But With Conditions

The issue soon reached the Madras High Court, where a petition sought to prevent the distribution of appointment letters.
The court, however, allowed the government to proceed, but imposed an important condition: the appointments would remain temporary and would be subject to the final outcome of judicial proceedings.
The bench also directed authorities to clarify whether existing rules governing compassionate appointments had been properly followed before granting the jobs.

At the same time, the judges observed that policy decisions generally fall within the government’s domain unless there is clear evidence of legal violations.
Bypoll Plans Face Legal Roadblock
Adding to Vijay’s political challenges, the Madras High Court has temporarily restrained the Election Commission from announcing bypolls in five Assembly constituencies until July 31.
The stay comes after multiple election petitions challenged the validity of victories in the recent Assembly elections, including Vijay’s own victory from Tiruchi East.
The court observed that conducting bypolls before resolving these petitions could create an unusual constitutional situation if the original election results were later overturned.
Why These Bypolls Matter
The upcoming bypolls are politically significant for Vijay and TVK.
Apart from the vacant Tiruchi East seat, four former AIADMK MLAs who resigned after joining TVK are expected to contest again under their new party’s banner. Winning these seats would significantly strengthen TVK’s numbers in the Tamil Nadu Assembly and reinforce Vijay’s political authority.
However, with legal proceedings still pending and election notifications temporarily stalled, the party’s expansion strategy now faces uncertainty.
Political Temperature Continues to Rise
As Tamil Nadu moves closer to the next electoral battle, the Karur compensation issue has evolved from a humanitarian decision into a major political debate.

For Vijay, balancing public sympathy, legal scrutiny, and political accountability will be critical in the weeks ahead. With both the courts and political rivals closely watching every move, the outcome of these developments could shape the state’s political narrative well beyond the upcoming bypolls.
