India Announces Fresh Aid for Palestine… Jaishankar Reaffirms Two-State Solution While Launching UNSC Bid
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar unveiled new humanitarian projects for Palestine as India formally launched its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2028–29.
India has announced a fresh package of humanitarian assistance for Palestine, reaffirming its longstanding support for a two-state solution even as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar launched the country’s campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028–2029 term in New York.
The announcement highlights New Delhi’s continued engagement with the Palestinian people while balancing its growing strategic ties with Israel.
India unveils new humanitarian projects
Speaking during the launch of India’s UNSC campaign, S. Jaishankar said India had committed to several new development initiatives for Palestine at the Palestine Donor Group meeting held in Brussels.
The projects include:
- A specialty hospital
- An artificial limb fitment centre
- A vocational training institute
Jaishankar said the initiatives reflect India’s enduring commitment to the welfare of the Palestinian people and are consistent with its long-standing support for a negotiated two-state solution.
Continued support for UNRWA
The External Affairs Minister also reiterated India’s backing for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which provides humanitarian assistance and essential services to Palestinian refugees.
Despite funding cuts by several countries in recent years, India has continued its annual contribution of $5 million to UNRWA. Last month, New Delhi released $2.5 million as part of its yearly commitment.
Jaishankar noted that UNRWA considers India among its leading emerging donors, underscoring New Delhi’s consistent humanitarian engagement.
India balances ties with Israel and Palestine
India’s latest announcement comes at a time when its strategic partnership with Israel has grown significantly.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Israel earlier this year, reflecting the strengthening bilateral relationship. At the same time, India has maintained its traditional support for Palestinian statehood and humanitarian assistance.
By continuing aid to Palestine while expanding cooperation with Israel, New Delhi has sought to maintain a balanced diplomatic approach in the Middle East.

UNSC campaign gathers momentum
Jaishankar’s announcement coincided with the formal launch of India’s campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028–2029 term.
During his address, he highlighted India’s contributions to global peace, multilateral cooperation, and its commitment to international law, including support for the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
India is seeking broader international backing for its UNSC bid while positioning itself as a responsible global stakeholder.
India participates in Brussels donor meeting

India also participated in the European Union-backed Palestine Donor Group meeting in Brussels, where the EU announced a €900 million assistance package for the Palestinian Authority.
Representing India, Sripriya Ranganathan, Secretary (CPV & OIA) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), reaffirmed New Delhi’s support for the Palestinian people, the two-state solution, and Palestine’s aspiration for United Nations membership.
She also announced additional Indian initiatives focused on healthcare, rehabilitation, women’s empowerment, education, and vocational training, reinforcing India’s long-term development partnership with Palestine.
The fresh assistance comes as humanitarian agencies continue to warn about the deteriorating situation in Gaza, with international efforts ongoing to expand relief and reconstruction support.
