Former Australia opener David Warner has admitted to a drink-driving offence in Sydney, raising fresh questions over his future as Sydney Thunder captain ahead of the upcoming Big Bash League season.
David Warner is facing renewed scrutiny after admitting to a drink-driving offence, with the incident prompting questions about his future as captain of Sydney Thunder.
The former Australia opener appeared before Waverley Local Court, where his lawyer confirmed that Warner had admitted to a mid-range drink-driving charge arising from an incident that took place during the Easter weekend.
What Happened?
According to court proceedings, Warner was stopped by police in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on April 5 after officers conducted a roadside breath test.
He was subsequently taken to Maroubra Police Station, where further testing reportedly recorded a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.104, more than twice the legal driving limit in New South Wales.
Warner’s lawyer, Bobby Hill, told the court that the cricketer accepted responsibility for his actions and acknowledged that driving after consuming alcohol was a serious error.
Lawyer: ‘It Was a Reckless Decision’
Representing Warner, Hill said the former Australian captain had consumed three glasses of wine while visiting a friend’s home before deciding to drive.
He stressed that drinking alcohol itself was not the issue but admitted that Warner’s decision to get behind the wheel instead of arranging alternative transport was reckless.
The lawyer also noted that discussions regarding the legal proceedings are continuing.

Questions Over Sydney Thunder Captaincy
The incident has reignited debate over Warner’s leadership role with Sydney Thunder.
The franchise is part of a New South Wales Government road safety initiative aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of drink-driving. Given that association, some observers have questioned whether the incident could affect Warner’s captaincy ahead of the next Big Bash League (BBL) season.
At the time of publication, Sydney Thunder has not issued any official statement regarding Warner’s leadership position.
Another Chapter in a Controversial Career
Warner’s latest controversy comes years after his involvement in the infamous 2018 ball-tampering scandal in South Africa, which resulted in a lifetime leadership ban imposed by Cricket Australia.
That sanction was lifted in 2024, clearing the way for Warner to become captain of Sydney Thunder.
The veteran batter had recently returned from the Pakistan Super League (PSL), where he captained the Karachi Kings, before the drink-driving incident occurred.
Future Yet to Be Decided
While Warner has accepted responsibility for his actions, it remains unclear whether the legal matter will have any impact on his cricketing responsibilities.
With the domestic season approaching, attention will now turn to whether Sydney Thunder and Cricket Australia take any further action regarding one of Australian cricket’s most high-profile figures.
