Adam Zampa Makes Surprise State Switch Again… Australia Star Leaves New South Wales for Queensland

Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa has made another surprise move in domestic cricket, ending his association with New South Wales (NSW) and joining Queensland ahead of the upcoming Australian domestic season.

The 34-year-old white-ball specialist, who has represented Australia in more than 230 international matches, will now begin a new chapter with Queensland after receiving formal approval from Cricket Australia.

Third State Team of Zampa’s Career

This is not the first time Zampa has changed domestic teams.

Before moving to New South Wales, the leg-spinner spent seven years representing South Australia. His latest transfer means Queensland becomes the third state side of his professional career.

According to Cricket Australia, the move was approved because Zampa is a centrally contracted player and therefore falls outside the domestic salary cap, allowing him to represent the state of his choice.

Why Queensland?

One of the biggest reasons behind the move is convenience.

Zampa currently lives near Byron Bay, on the northern coast of New South Wales, making Queensland a more practical option for training and travel.

The relocation is expected to provide greater flexibility while allowing him to continue balancing domestic commitments with Australia’s demanding international schedule.

Red-Ball Opportunities Remain Limited

Despite joining Queensland, Zampa is unlikely to feature regularly in the Sheffield Shield.

The leg-spinner has not played a first-class match since 2024, largely because of his packed international calendar.

In fact, he has featured in only one first-class game over the past three seasons, with his primary focus remaining white-ball cricket.

Queensland already have experienced leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson, meaning Zampa’s opportunities in red-ball cricket are expected to remain limited.

Queensland Welcomes the Australian Star

Queensland’s High Performance boss Bennett King welcomed the signing, saying Zampa’s experience would be invaluable for the squad.

King praised the veteran spinner as a world-class performer and expressed confidence that his knowledge would benefit younger players within the group.

He also reiterated the state’s commitment to helping Zampa continue representing Australia at the highest level.

One of Australia’s Finest White-Ball Spinners

Zampa has established himself as one of Australia’s most successful white-ball bowlers over the past decade.

He has represented Australia in 121 One-Day Internationals and 118 T20 Internationals, claiming more than 350 international wickets across the two formats.

Despite his impressive record, the leg-spinner has never earned a Test cap, largely due to the long-standing presence of veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon in Australia’s red-ball setup.

At this stage of his career, a Test debut appears increasingly unlikely.

Busy Schedule Continues

Zampa is currently playing for London Spirit in The Hundred in England.

He is expected to join the Queensland squad once his commitments in the 100-ball tournament conclude.

Meanwhile, Queensland will begin the new season under the guidance of former Australian all-rounder James Hopes, who recently returned after coaching in Major League Cricket (MLC) in the United States.

With another domestic move completed, Adam Zampa remains firmly focused on extending his successful white-ball career while continuing to play a key role for Australia on the international stage.
