Adam Zampa has made another unexpected move in Australian domestic cricket, with the experienced leg-spinner deciding to leave New South Wales (NSW) and join Queensland ahead of the upcoming Sheffield Shield season.
The decision has surprised many cricket followers, considering Zampa’s established association with NSW. However, the move is believed to be driven by practical reasons, including his personal location and the demands of a busy international schedule.
The 34-year-old Australian spinner lives near Byron Bay on the northern coast of New South Wales, and joining Queensland will provide him with increased flexibility and easier access for training and preparation.
Zampa begins a new domestic chapter
Although Zampa has not featured regularly in first-class cricket recently, his experience and international record make him one of Australia’s most valuable white-ball specialists.

The leg-spinner has represented Australia in 121 ODIs and 118 T20Is, becoming a key member of the team’s limited-overs setup over the years.
Due to a packed international calendar, Zampa has not played a Sheffield Shield match since 2024. His upcoming stint with Queensland is also expected to be limited, as his international commitments are likely to remain his primary focus.
Despite that, Queensland will benefit from having an experienced international bowler within their squad, especially alongside fellow leg-spinner Mitch Swepson.
Not Zampa’s first team change
This is not the first time Zampa has changed his domestic allegiance.
Before joining New South Wales, the spinner spent seven seasons representing South Australia, where he established himself as one of the country’s leading spin options.
His latest move highlights the flexibility available to Australia’s nationally contracted players. Since Zampa falls outside the domestic salary cap structure, he was free to choose a state team that best suited his circumstances.
Cricket Australia has formally approved the transfer, allowing the spinner to begin his new association with Queensland.
