Popular television actor Rashami Desai is preparing to return to TV fiction after a gap of nearly eight years, and she says the decision wasn’t driven simply by a desire to make a comeback.

The actor will be seen playing Maya in the upcoming show Sayoneee, marking her return to television fiction after years of exploring different opportunities and waiting for a role she genuinely connected with.

During her time away from daily fiction, Rashami says she received several offers. However, rather than choosing a project simply to remain visible on television, she continued waiting for a story that gave her a strong reason to return.

That search, she says, finally ended with Sayoneee.

Why Rashami Desai chose Maya

Throughout her television career, Rashami Desai has portrayed several memorable characters, but her approach towards selecting roles appears to have become increasingly deliberate.

For Rashami, Maya stood apart because the character felt practical and grounded rather than something created purely for dramatic effect.

Speaking about the role, Rashami said, “Maya is not just a character or an imagination. She is a very practical character that I am going to play in Sayoneee.”

She also acknowledged that her absence from television fiction was not due to a lack of opportunities.

The actor revealed that she had been approached for multiple projects but chose to decline them because she did not feel sufficiently connected with either their stories or characters.

‘I wasn’t looking for a comeback’

Perhaps the clearest explanation for Rashami’s long break came when she spoke about what she actually wanted from her next television project.

“Every artist wants to play a beautifully written character. I wasn’t looking for a comeback on television; I was looking for a purpose,” Rashami said.

Her remark offers an insight into why she was willing to remain away from television fiction despite receiving offers.

For the actor, simply appearing regularly on screen, working and earning money wasn’t enough. She wanted her next character to leave an impression on audiences.

“You should do something that people remember you for, and that’s what I am known for,” she said.

According to Rashami Desai, Sayoneee offered precisely what she had been waiting for.

The actor believes the show’s strength goes beyond any individual performer involved in the project.

“Sayoneee has that spark. I feel the story is bigger than the artists themselves,” she said.

That connection with the larger narrative ultimately appears to have convinced Rashami that Maya was the right character with which to return to television fiction.

Her comments also suggest viewers can expect a character grounded in real emotions and practical circumstances rather than one built solely around conventional television drama.

Her television journey has consequently included fiction, reality shows and guest appearances, but Sayoneee represents something different a return to a full-fledged fictional character after a lengthy gap.
