Rohit Sharma’s 2027 World Cup future sparks fresh Ajit Agarkar debate; could VVS Laxman take over as chief selector?

The road to the 2027 ODI World Cup is already forcing the BCCI to confront some significant long-term decisions — and they go beyond simply choosing India’s playing XI.

At the centre of the discussion are three of the biggest names in Indian cricket: Rohit Sharma, Ajit Agarkar and VVS Laxman.

Recent reports have raised questions over Agarkar’s continuation as chairman of the senior men’s selection committee, with Laxman’s name being linked to a potential role in a revamped setup. The uncertainty has unfolded against the backdrop of an intense debate over whether Rohit will remain part of India’s plans all the way to the 2027 World Cup.

Importantly, the situation remains fluid. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said earlier this month that the Board had yet to decide on an extension for Agarkar. He also rejected reports that changes to the selection committee or a new Director of Cricket position had been discussed at a recent BCCI meeting.

How did Rohit Sharma’s future enter the conversation?

Speculation surrounding Rohit’s international future intensified during India’s ODI tour of England in July.

Reports at the time suggested that selectors were considering looking beyond the veteran opener as India began shaping its squad for 2027. However, Saikia publicly pushed back against suggestions that India’s final ODI of the tour would be Rohit’s last international appearance.

Speaking to PTI ahead of that match, Saikia said the Lord’s ODI would not be Rohit’s final game for India, dismissing the retirement speculation circulating at the time.

There is an important correction to some accounts of the episode: India’s second ODI was played at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on July 16, while the third and final ODI took place at Lord’s on July 19. The official BCCI schedule confirms those venues and dates.

And Rohit’s response in London could hardly have been more emphatic.

The former India captain smashed 138 off 110 balls at Lord’s, producing a century while speculation over his future remained firmly in the spotlight. India ultimately lost the match and the series 2-1, but Rohit’s innings ensured that the discussion surrounding his place in the ODI side did not disappear quietly.

Where does Ajit Agarkar stand?

Agarkar has headed India’s senior men’s selection committee since July 2023, overseeing a period that has included major changes in leadership and personnel across formats.

His original term reportedly ran until June 2026, after which he received a short extension. Reports in recent weeks have said the BCCI is considering whether he should continue, but an additional long-term extension has not been officially confirmed.

The uncertainty became more noticeable when Agarkar was absent from a BCCI review meeting in early September attended by senior figures including Gautam Gambhir, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer and Laxman.

Saikia subsequently explained that Agarkar was out of station when the meeting was arranged at short notice and could not participate virtually because of connectivity issues. The secretary also cautioned against reading the absence as confirmation of an impending change.

That distinction matters. While reports continue to question Agarkar’s future, the BCCI has not officially announced his replacement.

Could VVS Laxman become the next chief selector?

VVS Laxman, currently associated with the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence, has emerged in media reports surrounding potential changes to India’s cricket management structure.

Reports in August identified Laxman as a possible candidate if the Board decided to replace Agarkar as chief selector.

However, there has been no official confirmation that Laxman has been offered the position.

In fact, Saikia’s September comments added an important layer of caution to the speculation. Responding to reports about changes in India’s cricket-management structure, he said there had been “no such discussion” at the meeting in question and that the BCCI had not made the reported decisions.

For now, therefore, Laxman’s possible move into the selection structure should be treated as a reported possibility rather than a confirmed appointment.

Why the 2027 World Cup makes these decisions crucial

The wider issue is India’s transition towards the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Rohit remains an ODI option, but at 39, every series naturally generates questions over how long he intends to continue and how India’s selectors intend to balance experience with long-term planning.

The official squad for the England series offered a glimpse of that balancing act. Shubman Gill captained India, while Rohit and Virat Kohli remained part of the batting group.

That means India’s selectors face several interconnected decisions before the next World Cup: which senior players remain central to the ODI setup, how quickly younger players should be integrated, and who should oversee that transition from the selection table.

Those questions are also why the debate surrounding Agarkar is about considerably more than one selector’s contract.

Whoever leads India’s selection committee through the next phase could play a significant role in determining the squad that eventually travels to the 2027 World Cup.

For now, however, two things remain unresolved: Rohit Sharma has not been officially ruled out of India’s 2027 plans, and the BCCI has not officially named VVS Laxman as Ajit Agarkar’s successor.

Until the Board makes those decisions public, the battle over India’s World Cup roadmap remains one of the most closely watched stories in Indian cricket.
