Stephen Fleming Takes Over as England Test Coach, Joe Root Returns as Captain After Ben Stokes’ Retirement

England have announced a major leadership overhaul in their Test setup, appointing Stephen Fleming as the new head coach while handing the captaincy back to Joe Root following the retirement of Ben Stokes from international cricket.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed both appointments after completing what it described as a comprehensive recruitment process, with Fleming unanimously chosen to lead England’s next chapter in red-ball cricket.

The changes mark the beginning of a fresh era as one of world cricket’s most successful coaches joins forces with England’s highest Test run-scorer.

Stephen Fleming Begins a New Challenge

Speaking after his appointment, Fleming expressed his excitement about taking charge of one of cricket’s most prestigious coaching roles.

The former New Zealand captain said he is eager to build on the progress made under Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes while also helping develop England’s next generation of Test cricketers.

Fleming added that although immediate success remains the goal, creating a strong foundation for the team’s long-term future will be equally important.

One of Cricket’s Most Successful Coaches

Fleming arrives with an outstanding coaching record.

The 53-year-old spent nearly two decades with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), guiding the franchise to five Indian Premier League (IPL) titles and 10 finals.

His coaching experience also includes leading Southern Brave to The Hundred final in 2023, along with roles involving CSK’s overseas franchises in South Africa and the United States. He has also previously coached the Melbourne Stars in Australia’s Big Bash League.

As a player, Fleming captained New Zealand in a record 80 Test matches, winning 28 of them. He also enjoyed county cricket success by leading Nottinghamshire to the 2005 County Championship title.

Joe Root Returns as England Test Captain

Alongside Fleming’s appointment, Joe Root has been named England’s Test captain once again.

Root previously led England between 2017 and 2022, captaining the national side in 64 Test matches and recording 27 victories, the most by any England Test captain.

Although he stepped down after a difficult period overseas, Root has continued to establish himself as one of the world’s finest batters.

Since relinquishing the captaincy, he has become England’s highest Test run-scorer, surpassing Sir Alastair Cook, while climbing into the top five on the all-time list of Test run-getters.

Root Ready for Second Stint

Reacting to his appointment, Root described the opportunity to captain England again as a tremendous honour.

He said working alongside Stephen Fleming was one of the biggest motivations behind accepting the role, praising the New Zealander’s leadership qualities and vast coaching experience.

Root added that he is excited to guide England’s emerging group of players while helping build a successful environment for the future.
