‘Not an easy character to pull off’: Prithviraj Sukumaran names his favourite Ranveer Singh performance… and it’s not Dhurandhar
The Malayalam star says Ranveer Singh’s portrayal of Rocky Randhawa in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani remains one of the finest performances he has seen in recent years.
Ranveer Singh has won widespread acclaim for several memorable performances throughout his career, including his recent appearance in the Dhurandhar franchise. However, for actor-filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran, one role stands above the rest.
During a recent conversation with Galatta Plus, Prithviraj revealed that Ranveer’s performance as Rocky Randhawa in Karan Johar’s romantic drama Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani remains his favourite.
While acknowledging that Dhurandhar showcased another impressive side of Ranveer’s acting abilities, Prithviraj admitted that it was Rocky Randhawa’s lively, emotional and layered portrayal that left the biggest impact on him.
According to the Malayalam superstar, playing a character like Rocky was far more challenging than many people realise. He described the role as one that required a careful balance of humour, emotion and vulnerability, making it one of Ranveer Singh’s finest performances.
Prithviraj also revealed that he had personally conveyed the same appreciation to director Karan Johar, praising the filmmaker for creating a character that allowed Ranveer to explore multiple emotional shades while entertaining audiences.
Released in 2023, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani follows the love story of Rocky Randhawa, an energetic Punjabi businessman, and Rani Chatterjee, an independent Bengali journalist played by Alia Bhatt.
The film explores cultural differences, family values and gender stereotypes through the couple’s unique decision to exchange homes for three months before marriage.

As Rocky adjusts to Rani’s progressive Bengali household, he begins to question traditional notions of masculinity and relationships. Meanwhile, Rani faces resistance while living with Rocky’s conservative family, particularly from his authoritative grandmother, portrayed by Jaya Bachchan.
Featuring an ensemble cast that included Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi, and Jaya Bachchan, the film was praised for blending romance, humour and social commentary while delivering strong performances across the board.

Meanwhile, Prithviraj Sukumaran has an exciting lineup of projects ahead. The actor will next appear in director Nissam Basheer’s thriller I, Nobody, followed by the action drama Khalifa.
He is also collaborating with filmmaker Rahul Sadasivan on an upcoming horror film.
One of his most anticipated projects is the pan-Indian epic Varanasi, directed by SS Rajamouli, where Prithviraj shares screen space with Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra. The ambitious film is currently scheduled for release in April 2027.
With praise coming from an accomplished actor like Prithviraj Sukumaran, Ranveer Singh’s portrayal of Rocky Randhawa continues to be celebrated as one of the most memorable performances in contemporary Hindi cinema.
