Kalyani Priyadarshan missed her family’s Onam celebrations as she remained busy shooting Ranveer Singh-starrer Pralay in Mumbai.

For Kalyani Priyadarshan, this year’s Onam looked markedly different. There was no traditional feast with the family, no customary white saree photographs and no festive content for her social media followers.

Instead, the Malayalam actor was busy filming Pralay, her ambitious Bollywood project alongside Ranveer Singh, in Mumbai.

Sharing an update from the shoot, Kalyani wrote on Instagram, “Fully locked in to Pralay in Mumbai this Onam, so no Sadhya with the fam.” She accompanied the message with a collection of photographs from recent months and wished her followers a happy Onam. Her post offered a personal glimpse into the sacrifices that often come with taking on a demanding film schedule. (Kalyani Priyadarshan’s Instagram post)

‘Pralay’ begins filming in Mumbai

Filming for Pralay reportedly commenced in Mumbai earlier this month. The project is being positioned as a large-scale post-apocalyptic survival thriller, set against a city devastated by a deadly outbreak.

According to reports, the story revolves around a married couple attempting to survive as their familiar world collapses around them. However, the makers have kept specific details about Ranveer Singh and Kalyani Priyadarshan’s characters under wraps.

The film is reportedly being produced on a budget of approximately ₹300 crore, although its makers have not publicly confirmed the figure. If accurate, it would make Pralay one of the biggest standalone films of Ranveer’s career. (The Hollywood Reporter India)

Ranveer Singh reportedly backed the original concept

Pralay is directed by Jai Mehta, who previously co-directed the acclaimed series Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story with his father, filmmaker Hansal Mehta. Jai also directed the action series Lootere.

Hansal recently revealed that Ranveer personally approached Jai after being impressed by his work. The actor reportedly responded strongly to the original concept, following which considerable time and resources were invested in developing the film’s dystopian setting and visual identity. The screenplay has reportedly been written by Jai Mehta and Vishal Kapoor. The film is backed by Birla Studios, True Story Films and Ranveer Singh’s Maa Kasam Films, with the actor also attached as a producer. (The Statesman)

A major Bollywood step for Kalyani Priyadarshan

Pralay is expected to mark Kalyani Priyadarshan’s Bollywood debut, adding another significant chapter to her growing career. The actor has already built a strong following through Malayalam films such as Hridayam, Bro Daddy and the fantasy superhero film Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra.

Her appearance in the song “Abdi Abdi” from the AR Rahman-composed Genie also attracted widespread attention. Kalyani has previously spoken about wanting to challenge herself with roles and experiences she has not attempted before—and Pralay appears to fit that ambition perfectly.

While skipping Onam Sadhya with her family may have been disappointing, her message made it clear that she is fully committed to the film. With a massive reported budget, an apocalyptic premise and Ranveer Singh leading the project, Pralay has already become one of the most intriguing Bollywood productions currently underway.

The makers are yet to announce the film’s official release date.
