The Gordie Howe International Bridge has become the latest flashpoint in US-Canada relations after fresh remarks from a Trump administration official.

Fresh comments from a Trump administration official have triggered a political backlash in Canada, reigniting tensions over the Gordie Howe International Bridge—a landmark infrastructure project connecting Ontario with Michigan.

The controversy erupted after White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended President Donald Trump’s objections to the bridge’s ownership structure, saying it was “unacceptable” that Canada would control key aspects of the crossing. The remarks have been widely criticised by Canadian officials, who argue that they misrepresent how the project is structured.

What Did the White House Say?

Speaking to reporters, Karoline Leavitt said President Trump was unhappy with the current arrangement for the bridge, arguing that Canada would control what crosses the international link and questioning the level of American involvement in the project.

She also suggested that Trump has the authority to amend the presidential permit required for the bridge to operate, potentially delaying its opening if concerns remain unresolved.

The comments came shortly after Trump renewed his criticism of the project, demanding that the United States receive greater compensation and a larger ownership stake before the bridge becomes operational.

Canadian Leaders Push Back

The remarks quickly drew strong reactions north of the border.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the suggestion that Canada alone controls the bridge, explaining that while Canada financed the project, ownership is shared with the State of Michigan under existing agreements. He also noted that American workers and US-made steel were involved in the construction.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford also questioned Trump’s changing position, pointing out that the project had previously received support from the US administration during Trump’s first term.

Why the Bridge Matters

The Gordie Howe International Bridge is one of North America’s most significant infrastructure projects and is expected to become a vital trade corridor between Canada and the United States.

Construction began in 2018, with the project largely financed by the Canadian government. Once operational, the bridge is expected to ease congestion at existing border crossings and strengthen commercial links between Detroit and Windsor, one of the busiest trade routes on the continent.

Growing US-Canada Tensions

The dispute over the bridge comes amid broader disagreements between Washington and Ottawa over trade and bilateral relations.

Trump has repeatedly criticised Canada’s trade policies and has previously threatened to delay the bridge’s opening unless the United States secures more favourable terms. His administration’s latest comments have further fuelled political debate in Canada, where officials insist the current agreement benefits both countries.

As diplomatic discussions continue, both governments are expected to work toward resolving the dispute, with the bridge remaining a crucial project for cross-border commerce and economic cooperation.
