After years of masterminding election campaigns for some of India’s biggest political parties, Prashant Kishor has finally achieved a personal political breakthrough.
The Jan Suraaj founder won the Bankipur Assembly by-election in Bihar, defeating Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha. The victory marks Kishor’s first-ever electoral win and his entry into the Bihar Legislative Assembly as an MLA.
The bypoll was necessitated after former MLA Nitin Nabin vacated the seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha.
A Landmark Moment for Jan Suraaj
Kishor’s victory comes less than a year after his party, Jan Suraaj, made its electoral debut in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.
The party contested 238 of the state’s 243 Assembly seats, campaigning on promises of clean governance, youth participation and political reform. Despite widespread attention and an unconventional campaign featuring first-time candidates, the party failed to win a single seat.
The Bankipur by-election has now provided Jan Suraaj with its first legislative representation, giving Kishor’s political movement a much-needed boost.
The Mastermind Behind Several Landmark Elections
Long before entering active politics, Prashant Kishor, widely known as PK, earned national recognition as one of India’s most influential political strategists.
Ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he co-founded Citizens for Accountable Governance (CAG) and played a key role in the BJP’s campaign. His team introduced several high-profile outreach initiatives, including “Chai Pe Charcha,” 3D rallies, Run for Unity, and extensive digital engagement campaigns.

From Political Consultant to Party Leader
Born in 1977 in Rohtas district, Bihar, Prashant Kishor completed his schooling in Buxar before working for nearly eight years on a United Nations-supported public health programme.
He formally entered politics in 2018 by joining the Janata Dal (United) and was appointed the party’s vice president. However, his association with the JD(U) ended in 2020 after differences with party leadership over his continued political consulting work.
In October 2024, Kishor launched the Jan Suraaj campaign, embarking on an extensive statewide outreach programme across rural Bihar with the aim of building a grassroots political alternative.
A New Chapter in Bihar Politics
Kishor’s victory is being viewed as an important milestone, not only for his personal political ambitions but also for the future of Jan Suraaj.
After spending more than a decade crafting winning strategies for other leaders, the veteran election strategist has now secured his own mandate from the people.
