‘India Closer to the World’: PM Modi Unveils New Flight Model from Varanasi That Could Cut Travel Time Big Time
Launching the first Hub-and-Spoke international flight model from Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the initiative will connect smaller Indian cities to global destinations faster and more efficiently.
In a major push to strengthen India’s aviation network, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday hailed the launch of the country’s new Hub-and-Spoke international flight model, calling it a transformative step that will reduce travel time and connect smaller Indian cities to global opportunities.
The first operations under this model began from Varanasi, PM Modi’s parliamentary constituency, marking what he described as a “historic milestone” for Indian civil aviation.
Under the new system, passengers travelling from Tier-II and Tier-III cities will be able to connect to international destinations more smoothly by routing through major hub airports like Delhi, instead of relying on fragmented travel plans.
The initiative was officially launched by Air India, which began operating flights from Varanasi on Thursday as part of the model.
In his message, read out during the inauguration by Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha, the Prime Minister stressed how better connectivity can unlock massive economic potential.
“Improved international connectivity creates new opportunities for trade, tourism, investment, education, and business,” Modi said.
He highlighted that the model will allow people from smaller cities to access global destinations through a single integrated journey, making travel easier, faster, and more convenient.
The Prime Minister also pointed out that the new system will optimise existing airport infrastructure, improve aircraft utilisation, and reduce congestion at major airports.
“Most importantly, it will bring more regions of India closer to global opportunities,” he said.
For cities like Varanasi, the move is being seen as a major boost.

Calling Varanasi one of the world’s oldest living cities and a symbol of India’s rich civilisational heritage, Modi said better connectivity will help the city strengthen its links with the world while preserving its unique cultural identity.
The Hub-and-Spoke model is widely used in global aviation systems, where smaller regional airports act as “spokes” feeding passengers into larger “hub” airports for long-haul international connections.
For Indian travellers, this means fewer disconnected bookings, shorter layovers, and smoother transit experiences.
As India continues to emerge as one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, this move is expected to play a key role in expanding air travel beyond metro cities and making global connectivity more accessible to millions.
