Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Tuesday conferred Indonesia’s highest civilian honour, the Bintang Republik Indonesia Adipurna, during his official visit to Jakarta, marking another significant milestone in the growing relationship between India and Indonesia.

The prestigious honour was announced by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Istana Merdeka (Presidential Palace), recognising PM Modi’s contribution to strengthening bilateral ties and fostering cooperation between the two nations.

The award is Indonesia’s highest national decoration and is presented to individuals who have rendered exceptional service towards the unity, prosperity and development of the Republic of Indonesia.

Indonesia’s Highest Civilian Recognition

Instituted in 1959, the Bintang Republik Indonesia (Star of the Republic of Indonesia) represents the country’s highest order of honour for both civilians and military personnel.

The Bintang Adipurna is reserved for distinguished personalities whose contributions have significantly advanced Indonesia’s interests and strengthened international partnerships.

By conferring the honour on Prime Minister Modi, Indonesia acknowledged the deepening strategic partnership between the two democracies.

Grand Ceremonial Welcome in Jakarta

Prime Minister Modi received a ceremonial welcome at the Istana Merdeka, where he was greeted by President Prabowo Subianto with full state honours.

Sharing his gratitude on social media, the Prime Minister thanked the Indonesian leadership for the warm reception.“Thank you for the warm welcome at the Istana Merdeka!” PM Modi wrote.

The visit underscores the commitment of both countries to expanding cooperation across several strategic sectors.

India-Indonesia Partnership Set to Expand

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the visit marks an important step in strengthening the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

In an official statement, the MEA said the discussions are expected to create fresh opportunities across priority sectors while reinforcing the long-standing friendship, shared democratic values and mutual trust between the two nations.

Defence and Strategic Cooperation Expected to Deepen

Sources familiar with the developments indicated that several major initiatives are expected to emerge from the Prime Minister’s visit.

Among the key areas of cooperation are:

  India will support the development of Indonesia-specific Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), reflecting international confidence in India’s election management expertise.
• Indonesia is expected to procure India’s Astra air-to-air missiles, strengthening defence ties following the reported success of indigenous missile systems.
• Both nations are likely to collaborate on the development of the strategically significant Sabang Port, located near the Strait of Malacca, an area of immense geopolitical importance.
• India is also expected to invest in steel, nickel, and rare earth permanent magnet manufacturing in Indonesia to strengthen critical mineral supply chains.
• Discussions are also underway regarding the expansion of Indonesia’s BrahMos missile capabilities with additional Indian support.

While official agreements are awaited, these proposed initiatives highlight the growing strategic convergence between the two Indo-Pacific partners.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation

Prime Minister Modi also signed the official guestbook at the Presidential Palace before holding bilateral discussions with President Prabowo Subianto.

The meeting reflected the shared commitment of both leaders to deepen cooperation in areas including trade, defence, technology, critical minerals, maritime security, and infrastructure development.
