Rohit Sharma, Gautam Gambhir Laugh Off Rift Rumours at Lord’s: Balcony Chat Sparks Fresh Twist Before ODI Decider
As speculation over Rohit Sharma’s ODI future continues, the Indian skipper and head coach Gautam Gambhir were seen sharing smiles and conversations at Lord’s, with the BCCI dismissing retirement rumours ahead of the series finale.
The atmosphere inside the Indian cricket team camp appeared far more relaxed than the headlines suggested as Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir were spotted sharing laughs during India’s training session at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground ahead of the third and final ODI.
For the past few days, reports surrounding Rohit’s future in international cricket have dominated discussions. Speculation intensified after claims emerged that the experienced opener could be playing his final ODI for India in London. However, the visuals from Saturday’s practice session painted a completely different picture.
Standing together on the famous Lord’s balcony, Rohit Sharma, Gautam Gambhir, and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak were seen engaged in a light-hearted conversation before walking towards the practice area. Their cheerful interaction quickly caught the attention of fans and cricket experts, many interpreting it as a strong response to recent reports suggesting friction between the Indian captain and the head coach.
The rumours had gained momentum after reports claimed that Rohit had once played a key role in bringing Gambhir into the Indian coaching setup but that their relationship allegedly deteriorated during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Saturday’s images, however, suggested that the dressing room remains united ahead of an important contest.
While the off-field chatter continues, Rohit’s performances with the bat have also remained under scrutiny. The veteran opener has managed scores of 11 and 26 in the first two ODIs, with his slow-paced innings in Cardiff drawing criticism. His struggles have come at a time when young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has been in outstanding form, having scored two centuries in his last three ODI appearances while waiting for another opportunity in the playing XI.
The reports regarding Rohit’s future also suggested that the national selection committee was looking beyond the veteran for the 2027 ODI World Cup, despite the batter reportedly expressing his desire to continue representing India in the tournament.
However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) moved swiftly to dismiss speculation. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia clarified that there was no truth to reports claiming Sunday’s match would be Rohit’s final ODI appearance, putting an official end to the retirement rumours—at least for now.

The conversations surrounding Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir have also attracted attention in recent weeks. Since Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket, observers have questioned whether the two share a strained relationship after they were rarely seen interacting publicly during training sessions.

Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, however, rejected those claims following India’s defeat in the second ODI. He stated that both Kohli and Gambhir regularly discuss match situations and strategic plans, dismissing suggestions that he had been acting as a mediator between the two senior figures.
Kotak also expressed confidence in Rohit’s ability to bounce back, insisting that experienced players often require just one innings to rediscover their rhythm.
With the series now set for a decisive finish at Lord’s, the spotlight will once again fall on Rohit Sharma—not only because of the ongoing retirement speculation but also because India will be hoping their captain delivers a match-winning performance when it matters the most.
Whether the recent rumours finally fade away may ultimately depend on what unfolds with the bat on Sunday rather than what was seen on the famous Lord’s balcony.
