I Got Back Only 50%: Financier Blasts RJ Balaji Over Karuppu Chaos, Says ‘Only Suriya Stepped In’
A major controversy erupts behind the blockbuster success of Karuppu, as financier Tiruppur Subramaniam accuses director RJ Balaji of mismanagement and taking undue credit.
The Tamil film industry has been rocked by fresh controversy surrounding the blockbuster hit Karuppu, with veteran financier and distributor Tiruppur Subramaniam openly criticising director RJ Balaji for the troubled release of the film.
Despite Karuppu, headlined by Tamil superstar Suriya, emerging as the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2026 with over ₹300 crore worldwide, Subramaniam has revealed that he managed to recover only 50% of his investment, raising serious concerns over financial transparency and production management.
“Only Suriya helped the film release”
Speaking in a candid interaction, Subramaniam did not hold back. He alleged that during the critical hours before the film’s release, the director distanced himself from the crisis.
“We faced severe problems just two days before release. The director should have stood with us… but only Suriya came forward to help the film reach theatres.”
According to him, while multiple stakeholders struggled to resolve last-minute issues, RJ Balaji stayed away and later took credit for the film’s success.
Budget spiral and financial risks
The financier further highlighted the alarming escalation in the film’s budget. Originally estimated at ₹30–40 crore, the production reportedly ballooned to nearly ₹80 crore.
“When budgets go from ₹40 crore to ₹80 crore, what can one do? It puts financiers at serious risk.”
He added that he personally invested funds to ensure the film’s release but could not recover the full amount.
“I invested my own money… but I have recovered only 50%.”
Release delay and last-minute chaos
Karuppu was initially planned for a Deepavali 2025 release, but delays pushed it by nearly eight months.

The situation escalated on release day when screenings were abruptly cancelled across theatres in Tamil Nadu. Exhibitors cited financial issues and pending settlements.
Industry reports suggested that dues of around ₹10 crore linked to Dream Warrior Pictures caused the delay. In such cases, distributors often withhold the Key Delivery Message (KDM)—a mandatory digital key required for screening films—until payments are cleared.

The situation even led to an emotional moment when RJ Balaji shared a video of himself in tears following the cancellation of shows.
From crisis to blockbuster
Despite the turbulent journey, Karuppu finally released on May 15, 2026, and received strong reviews from both critics and audiences.
The film went on to collect over ₹300 crore worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2026.
However, the controversy highlights the stark contrast between on-screen success and behind-the-scenes struggles, raising important questions about accountability in filmmaking.
Industry implications
Subramaniam’s statements have sparked fresh debate within the Tamil film industry regarding financial discipline, transparency, and the responsibilities of filmmakers.
While Karuppu continues to be celebrated as a blockbuster, the controversy serves as a reminder that commercial success does not guarantee fair returns for every stakeholder involved.
