The Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2026 has wrapped up, but the excitement surrounding the event is far from over. Once considered a regional auto exhibition, GIIAS has now emerged as a key platform showcasing vehicles and technologies that could soon make their way to India.

Several global automakers used the event to unveil new models, concept vehicles, and future mobility solutions. While dozens of vehicles grabbed attention, five stood out for their potential impact on the Indian automobile market.

Here’s a closer look at the five most exciting vehicles from GIIAS 2026 that Indian buyers should keep an eye on.

1. Maruti Suzuki XL7 hints at the next-generation XL6

The Maruti Suzuki XL7 may not be a revolutionary product for Indonesia, but it carries significant importance for India.

The SUV features refreshed styling while retaining its familiar mechanical setup. Industry experts believe the upcoming Maruti Suzuki XL6 facelift could borrow several design elements from the XL7, including a sharper front fascia and updated exterior styling.

Expected upgrades for the India-bound model include a larger touchscreen infotainment system, connected car technology, improved convenience features, and enhanced cabin quality. Maruti could also introduce an underbody-mounted CNG tank and potentially a strong-hybrid powertrain, making the XL6 even more competitive in the premium MPV segment.

2. Jetour T2 i-DM and iCAUR V23 showcase China’s growing strength

Chinese automakers once focused primarily on affordability, but GIIAS 2026 demonstrated how far they have progressed in technology and design.

Among the biggest attractions were the Jetour T2 i-DM and iCAUR V23, two premium SUVs developed under the Chery Group. With JSW Motors preparing to introduce multiple Chery-owned brands in India, both SUVs could become serious contenders in the country’s growing SUV market.

Featuring bold styling inspired by premium off-road vehicles, luxurious interiors, advanced software, and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) as well as electric (EV) powertrains, these SUVs could disrupt the segment if launched at competitive prices.

3. BMW iX3 pushes electric luxury to the next level

BMW’s latest iX3 divided opinions with its bold design, but impressed visitors with its cutting-edge technology and premium cabin.

The luxury electric SUV offers a highly digital interior, premium materials, and advanced features expected from BMW’s latest generation of EVs.

One of its biggest highlights is the claimed driving range of over 800 km, making it especially attractive for markets like India where long-distance EV travel remains a major concern.

Whenever the iX3 reaches Indian shores, it is expected to become one of the most talked-about luxury electric SUVs.

4. Toyota Fortuner biofuel prototypes signal a different future

While electric vehicles dominated headlines, Toyota showcased an alternative approach by presenting two experimental Fortuner models powered by biofuels.

One prototype supports E100 ethanol, while the other runs on B50 biodiesel, reflecting Toyota’s strategy of exploring multiple sustainable fuel options rather than relying solely on battery-electric vehicles.

Although there is no confirmation regarding production or an India launch, these prototypes highlight Toyota’s commitment to alternative fuel technologies and could influence future developments in India’s SUV market.

5. Honda Prelude brings back performance excitement

The all-new Honda Prelude emerged as one of the show’s biggest crowd-pullers.

Powered by a 2.0-litre petrol-hybrid engine producing around 200 bhp, the sporty coupe combines performance with everyday practicality.

With its sleek design, premium interior, and hybrid powertrain, the Prelude could serve as a halo product for Honda in India. However, its success will largely depend on competitive pricing if the company decides to introduce it in the country.

Other noteworthy vehicles at GIIAS 2026

Apart from the top five highlights, several other vehicles generated significant interest.

The Hyundai Niera Concept previewed what is expected to become the Kia Carens Clavis EV, while the Volvo EX90 confirmed its India-bound plans. The Jaecoo J5 EV, another SUV linked to JSW Motors, also drew attention, alongside the Wuling Eksion, which is expected to evolve into the MG Starlight for the Indian market.

Interestingly, some anticipated models—including the Kia Sorento, Hyundai i20, and Maruti Suzuki Fronx Hybrid—were absent from this year’s event.

Why GIIAS matters for India

Over the past few years, GIIAS has transformed into one of Asia’s most influential automotive exhibitions. Many vehicles showcased in Indonesia eventually find their way to India, either with minimal changes or as market-specific adaptations.

With electrification, hybrid technology, connected features, and alternative fuels becoming the industry’s biggest priorities, GIIAS 2026 offered a glimpse into what Indian consumers can expect over the next few years.

Attention will now shift to the Bharat Mobility Expo 2027, where several of these global products could make their official Indian debut.
