Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk’s pledge to “own no house” has once again become a talking point as renewed interest surrounds the billionaire’s real estate holdings and lifestyle.

The statement, first shared on X (formerly Twitter) in May 2020, marked a dramatic shift from owning one of California’s most impressive luxury property portfolios to embracing a minimalist way of living.

The Post That Started It All

On May 1, 2020, Musk announced his decision in a brief but widely shared post.“I am selling almost all physical possessions. Will own no house.”

When another user asked why he was making such a move, Musk replied with a single word:“Freedom.”

The post quickly went viral and fueled widespread discussions about the billionaire’s changing priorities.

Selling a Multi-Million-Dollar Property Portfolio

Before making the announcement, Musk reportedly owned seven premium properties in California, collectively valued at more than $100 million.

His portfolio included:

• A 16,251-square-foot mansion in Bel Air.
• Several neighboring homes that formed a private residential compound.
• The former home of legendary actor Gene Wilder.
• The historic Guignécourt Estate in Hillsborough.

One of the most talked-about sales involved Gene Wilder’s former residence.

Musk had publicly expressed his desire to preserve the property’s legacy, saying it “cannot be torn down or lose any of its soul.”

The house was later sold to Gene Wilder’s nephew, while the Guignécourt Estate became the final California property to leave Musk’s portfolio.

Where Does Elon Musk Live Now?

Following the sale of his California homes, Musk has repeatedly stated that he no longer owns a traditional residence.

According to previous reports, he now spends much of his time in a prefabricated modular home located near SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas.

The modest home stands in sharp contrast to the lavish mansions he once owned.

Musk has also said that while travelling, he often stays with friends instead of maintaining multiple personal residences.

Reports of Texas Property Links

Although Musk has maintained that he does not personally own a conventional house, reports have suggested that companies linked to him later acquired several high-end properties in Texas.

According to an investigation by The Wall Street Journal, at least three neighboring homes in West Lake Hills, an upscale suburb of Austin, were purchased between 2022 and 2025.

The report claimed the properties were intended to house the mothers of some of Musk’s children and their families.

It also stated that Musk spent time at a waterfront mansion owned by a friend and in luxury apartments in Austin, while businesses connected to him expanded land acquisitions around Tesla’s Gigafactory and the planned community known as Snailbrook.

Some of these Texas properties were reportedly later sold or transferred to companies associated with Musk’s business network.

A Different Approach to Wealth

While most billionaires continue to invest heavily in luxury real estate, Musk has projected a different image by publicly embracing a simpler lifestyle.

Whether motivated by practicality, personal philosophy, or business priorities, his decision to move away from traditional homeownership remains one of the most unusual choices made by a modern business leader.
