Elon Musk’s ‘Own No House’ Promise explained: From $100 Million mansions to a tiny texas home
After selling his lavish California real estate portfolio, Elon Musk embraced a minimalist lifestyle—but reports suggest his Texas property connections are more complex than they appear.
Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur behind SpaceX, Tesla, and X, made headlines in 2020 when he publicly vowed to give up homeownership in pursuit of what he described as “freedom.” Years later, that statement has resurfaced, reigniting curiosity about where one of the world’s richest people actually lives.
While Musk sold off a real estate portfolio worth more than $100 million, subsequent reports indicate that his housing arrangements in Texas have evolved in unexpected ways.
The Viral ‘Own No House’ Pledge
On May 1, 2020, Musk posted a message on X (formerly Twitter) that quickly attracted global attention.”I am selling almost all physical possessions. Will own no house.”
When another user asked why he was making such a dramatic decision, Musk responded with a single word:“Freedom.”
The statement became one of the entrepreneur’s most widely discussed personal commitments, reflecting his desire to simplify his lifestyle despite his immense wealth.
Selling a Luxury Property Empire
Before his public pledge, Musk reportedly owned an impressive collection of luxury homes across California.
According to Architectural Digest, his portfolio included:
- A 16,251-square-foot mansion in Bel Air
- Several neighbouring properties that formed a private residential compound
- The former home of legendary actor Gene Wilder
- The historic Guignécourt Estate in Hillsborough
Collectively, the properties were listed for more than $100 million.
One of the most notable sales involved Gene Wilder’s former residence.
Musk publicly stated that he wanted the iconic home to preserve its original charm, insisting it “cannot be torn down or lose any of its soul.”
The property was eventually sold to Gene Wilder’s nephew, helping preserve its legacy.
The sale of the Guignécourt Estate marked the completion of Musk’s California property sell-off.
A Tiny Home Near SpaceX
After disposing of his luxury residences, Musk claimed he no longer owned a conventional home.

According to Architectural Digest, he has said he lives in a prefabricated modular home located near SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas.
The compact residence stands in sharp contrast to the sprawling mansions he once owned and aligns with his publicly stated preference for a simpler lifestyle.
Musk has also said that when travelling, he frequently stays with friends instead of maintaining multiple personal residences.
Reports Suggest a More Complicated Picture
Although Musk maintains that he does not personally own a traditional home, an investigation by The Wall Street Journal painted a more nuanced picture of his real estate connections.

The report stated that companies linked to Musk acquired several luxury properties in West Lake Hills, an upscale suburb of Austin, Texas, between 2022 and 2025.
According to the investigation, the neighbouring homes were intended to accommodate the mothers of some of Musk’s children and their families.
The report also claimed that Musk spent time at a waterfront mansion owned by a friend as well as in luxury apartments in Austin.
Meanwhile, businesses associated with the billionaire reportedly expanded their land holdings near Tesla’s Gigafactory Texas and the proposed community known as Snailbrook.
Some of those properties were later transferred or sold to companies connected with Musk’s associates, according to the investigation.
Minimalism or Strategic Living?
Musk’s decision to step away from traditional homeownership continues to spark debate.
While he maintains that he has embraced a minimalist lifestyle centred around functionality and freedom, reports suggest his broader network of business entities remains actively involved in real estate acquisitions.
Whether viewed as a personal lifestyle choice or part of a broader long-term strategy, Musk’s unconventional approach to housing remains as distinctive as many of his business ventures.
