C. Joseph Vijay's final film Jana Nayagan earned ₹8 crore on Day 6, taking its India net collection to ₹143.40 crore despite a noticeable weekday slowdown.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s final film as an actor, Jana Nayagan, appears to be losing momentum at the box office after an impressive start. Released on July 23, 2026, following a seven-month delay, the political action drama enjoyed a strong opening weekend driven by massive fan anticipation. However, collections have started to decline as the film enters its first working week.

According to early trade estimates by Sacnilk, the film collected ₹8 crore (net) on Day 6 (Tuesday), marking a 24.9% drop compared to Monday’s earnings.

Six-Day Collection Crosses ₹143 Crore

Despite the slowdown, Jana Nayagan has managed to post strong overall numbers during its first week.

The film’s reported collections are:

  • India Net Collection (6 Days): ₹143.40 crore
  • Overseas Gross Collection: ₹78.50 crore
  • Worldwide Gross Collection: ₹246.07 crore

While the figures remain impressive, the consistent weekday decline has raised questions about the film’s long-term box office performance.

Occupancy Drops on Tuesday

Trade reports suggest that the H. Vinoth directorial recorded an overall 19.8% theatre occupancy on Tuesday.

The fall in footfalls indicates that the initial festive rush and fan-driven demand are beginning to settle, a trend commonly seen after the opening weekend of major releases.

The coming weekend will now be crucial in determining whether the film can regain momentum.

Marvel Release Could Impact Collections

The road ahead may become more challenging for Jana Nayagan, especially in the Hindi-speaking markets.

The upcoming release of Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day this Friday is expected to attract a significant share of cinema audiences, potentially affecting the Tamil film’s performance outside its core markets.

Trade analysts believe the Hollywood blockbuster could limit the film’s growth in northern India during its second weekend.

A Historic Film for Tamil Cinema

Beyond its box office performance, Jana Nayagan holds historic significance.

The film marks the final acting appearance of C. Joseph Vijay, who is now serving as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. It also makes him the first sitting Chief Minister in India to have a film released in theatres while holding office, making the release a landmark moment in Tamil cinema and state politics.

Fans were particularly emotional after the filmmakers included a heartfelt tribute to Vijay during the film’s end credits, celebrating his journey from one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars to public office.

Faced Challenges Before Release

The makers of Jana Nayagan encountered several hurdles before its theatrical release.

The film was delayed by several months and reportedly became entangled in legal proceedings involving the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). During this period, portions of the film were also leaked online.

Despite these setbacks, the movie opened to packed theatres, with fans celebrating Vijay’s farewell to the silver screen.

Star-Studded Cast

Apart from C. Joseph Vijay, the film features an ensemble cast including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Prakash Raj, Mamitha Baiju, Sunil, Nassar, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Narain, Priyamani, and Monisha Blessy.

The music has been composed by Anirudh Ravichander, adding to the film’s commercial appeal. The movie has also been released in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi, allowing it to reach audiences across India.

As Jana Nayagan heads into its second weekend, all eyes will be on whether Vijay’s farewell film can maintain its box office momentum amid fresh competition.
