Akshay Kumar is stepping into territory rarely explored by mainstream Hindi cinema. The actor has officially begun shooting for Samuk, an ambitious alien survival-action thriller that aims to blend military realism, creature horror and large-scale action into a theatrical spectacle.

The film reunites Akshay with producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah after a gap of 13 years, making the project significant beyond its unusual genre.

Directed by Kanishk Varma, Samuk is being produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah and co-produced by Aashin A. Shah. The makers are positioning it as a large-scale pan-India theatrical film, backed by international talent in creature design and action.

While Indian cinema has increasingly embraced fantasy, science fiction and VFX-heavy spectacles, a full-fledged alien survival-action film featuring a mainstream Bollywood star remains relatively unusual.

That is where Samuk hopes to stand apart.

The project has reportedly been under development for more than two years, with Kanishk Varma and Vipul Shah working on a world that brings together military realism, survival horror and alien mythology.

The approach suggests that Samuk will not simply use an extraterrestrial threat as a visual gimmick. Instead, the alien is expected to form the foundation of a survival story built around physical action and suspense.

Vipul Shah reunites with Akshay Kumar after 13 years

For producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah, returning to a film set with Akshay after more than a decade carries an emotional significance.

Speaking about beginning the new project, Shah described the reunion as a joyful and proud moment, while stressing that the pair have always pushed each other to attempt something bigger.“After a gap of 13 years, starting a new journey with Akshay Kumar today is a very, very joyful, happy and proud moment for all of us.”

He added that their collaborations have consistently been driven by an ambition to improve upon what they had done before.“We have challenged each other in many ways to keep pushing ourselves and do better, and this time, the challenge is bigger than ever.”

The producer said he hopes the team can ultimately create something audiences will “absolutely love.”

The alien has a major Hollywood connection

One of the most intriguing aspects of Samuk is the team behind its central creature.

The alien has been designed by Alec Gillis, the Academy Award-nominated creature effects designer whose credits include work connected to the legendary Alien and Predator franchises, as well as Alien: Romulus.

Rather than relying entirely on conventional digital effects, the makers’ decision to bring in an experienced creature-effects specialist hints at a more physical, old-school approach to the monster.

That could give Samuk a distinct visual identity, particularly if practical creature effects are combined with modern VFX and CGI.

International action team joins ‘Samuk’

The ambition extends beyond the creature itself.

British action director Luke Tumber has also joined the project and will be responsible for designing and directing its action sequences.

The makers are aiming for a physically demanding action style that complements the film’s survival-thriller setting, rather than relying solely on larger-than-life set pieces.

For Akshay Kumar, who has built a significant part of his career around action and stunt-heavy roles, the format provides an opportunity to return to those strengths within a completely different genre.

Can ‘Samuk’ give Bollywood its own alien-action spectacle?

Films involving convincing extraterrestrial creatures demand considerable attention to production design, sound, VFX, practical effects and world-building. Samuk’s international technical team indicates that its makers understand the scale of that challenge.

With Akshay Kumar battling an extraterrestrial threat, an Alien and Predator veteran designing the creature, and an international stunt team handling the action, Samuk already has an unusual combination working in its favour.
