Will Robotaxi Drive Tesla's Next Growth Phase? Elon Musk Shares Vision During Q2 Earnings | Dainik Diary
Tesla CEO Elon Musk says Robotaxi and AI-powered technologies are central to the company's future, but safety will remain its highest priority.

Tesla is placing its future firmly on artificial intelligence (AI), autonomous driving, and robotics, with CEO Elon Musk calling the company’s Robotaxi platform one of its biggest long-term growth opportunities.

Speaking during Tesla’s Q2 earnings call, Musk said the company is rapidly expanding its unsupervised Robotaxi service in the United States. However, he emphasized that growth will not come at the cost of public safety.

‘One Accident Could Become Global News’

According to Musk, Tesla is moving as quickly as possible to expand Robotaxi operations, but the company must ensure the technology is safe before rolling it out on a larger scale.

He noted that while thousands of road fatalities occur every year in the United States, incidents involving autonomous vehicles receive far greater public and regulatory scrutiny.

Musk explained that even a single serious accident involving a Tesla Robotaxi could trigger intense global attention and prompt regulators to tighten restrictions on the company’s self-driving operations.

He added that Tesla’s objective is not only to avoid harming people but also to minimise risks to animals and pets as the technology continues to evolve.

Massive Expansion Plans for Autonomous Mobility

Despite the cautious approach, Musk said Tesla intends to expand its Robotaxi network at a very high compound growth rate in the coming years.

The company believes autonomous ride-hailing could become one of its most valuable businesses, reducing dependence on traditional vehicle sales and opening new revenue streams through AI-powered transportation services.

Industry analysts are closely watching the Robotaxi programme, viewing it as a key pillar of Tesla’s long-term strategy.

Optimus Humanoid Robot Remains a Major Focus

Beyond autonomous vehicles, Tesla is continuing development of its Optimus humanoid robot, which Musk described as a product with enormous long-term potential.

He acknowledged that creating a fully autonomous humanoid robot capable of performing real-world tasks without specific programming remains one of the most difficult engineering challenges in robotics.

According to Musk, Tesla is working to improve the robot’s dexterity, reliability, and durability so it can perform a wide range of everyday activities independently.

Heavy AI Investment Impacts Tesla’s Profits

Tesla’s renewed focus on AI and robotics comes as the company faces increasing financial pressure.

The automaker recently reported second-quarter earnings that fell short of analysts’ expectations, marking its first major profit miss in more than two years.

The company also posted negative free cash flow, driven largely by increased investments in AI infrastructure, robotics, and autonomous driving technology.

Tesla said higher operating expenses, lower average vehicle selling prices, and weaker regulatory credit revenue weighed on profitability during the quarter.

Investors React Despite Strong Deliveries

Following the earnings announcement, Tesla shares fell more than 4% in after-hours trading, as investors reacted to the weaker financial performance and rising cash burn.

Musk revealed that Tesla plans to invest more than $25 billion this year, nearly three times the amount spent in the previous year, as the company accelerates development of AI-powered self-driving systems, Robotaxis, and Optimus robots.

While these investments have pressured short-term earnings, Tesla believes they will play a crucial role in shaping the company’s future beyond conventional electric vehicles.
