SS Rajamouli Drops Biggest ‘Varanasi’ Update Yet: Mahesh Babu & Priyanka Chopra’s Epic Travels From Antarctica to Ancient Rome

New Delhi: Acclaimed filmmaker SS Rajamouli has shared fresh details about his highly anticipated film Varanasi, offering fans a glimpse into what promises to be one of India’s most ambitious cinematic spectacles. Headlined by Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra, the upcoming film is expected to blend mythology, adventure, history and science fiction on an unprecedented scale.

During a recent interview with European magazine Tsounami, Rajamouli revealed that the film will take audiences on an extraordinary journey across continents and time periods without giving away the storyline.“We shot a video about what the audience will experience and what they can expect, without revealing anything about the story. It travels from Varanasi to Antarctica, even Africa, and into the past, to Rome, before finally returning to Varanasi,” the filmmaker said.

The revelation has further fuelled excitement around the project, which has remained one of the most talked-about Indian films since its announcement.

Film Nearly 80% Complete

Rajamouli also confirmed that production is progressing steadily, with the majority of filming already finished.

According to the director, around 80% of the movie has been completed, including several of its biggest action sequences.“We’ve completed nearly 80% of Varanasi, and the biggest action sequences are already wrapped. The remaining shoot focuses on the final 20%, bringing together the smaller but equally important moments,” he explained.

The filmmaker also shed light on the production process, stating that filming, editing and visual effects work are taking place simultaneously to ensure a smooth workflow.“Our workflow never stops. As filming continues, editing happens simultaneously, and completed scenes are immediately sent to the VFX team. Production and post-production move hand in hand, helping us shape the film every step of the way,” Rajamouli added.

Shot on an IMAX Scale

Varanasi is reportedly being filmed with IMAX cameras, making it one of the most technically ambitious Indian productions to date. Reports suggest the film will feature breathtaking visuals ranging from the sacred ghats of Varanasi to the icy landscapes of Antarctica, the vast plains of Africa, and the grandeur of ancient Rome.

The movie is also expected to recreate large-scale sequences inspired by Ramayana, alongside historical and futuristic elements, giving audiences a unique cinematic experience.

Mystery Around the Story Continues

Despite revealing details about the film’s scale and production progress, SS Rajamouli has remained tight-lipped about the actual plot.

Industry buzz suggests that Varanasi will combine mythology, time travel, history and fantasy into a grand adventure, though the makers have not officially confirmed these reports.
