Sunny Deol on India-Pakistan Ties: “If India Is My Mother, Pakistan Is My Aunt”… Actor Avoids Political Debate

Patna: Ahead of the release of his upcoming film Batwara 1947, actor Sunny Deol shared his views on India and Pakistan while interacting with journalists in Patna, Bihar. Quoting his father, veteran actor Dharmendra, Sunny described India as his “mother” and Pakistan as his “aunt”, highlighting the historical bond between the two nations before Partition.

Responding to a question about Pakistan, Sunny said the countries share a common past and that he prefers not to view the relationship through political lenses.“We don’t talk about sentiments because the entire country was once one. As my father used to say, India is my mother and Pakistan is my aunt. In a way, we are all connected somewhere or the other,” Sunny Deol said.

The actor also clarified that Batwara 1947 was shot entirely in India and not in Pakistan.

‘We Are Storytellers, Not Politicians’

While addressing the media, Sunny Deol made it clear that he does not wish to engage in political discussions and believes that cinema should remain focused on storytelling.“I don’t want to go too deep into all that. We are actors and filmmakers. We choose stories and bring them to life. We don’t take them in a political direction, nor do we want to,” he added.

His remarks reflected his intention to keep the conversation centred on the film rather than broader political issues.

About Batwara 1947

Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, Batwara 1947 is set against the backdrop of the Partition of India and explores themes of humanity, displacement and communal harmony.

The film stars Sunny Deol as the head of a Muslim family, with Preity Zinta playing his wife and Karan Deol portraying their son.

According to the story, following India’s Independence, the family migrates to Pakistan, where they are allotted a house already occupied by an elderly Punjabi woman, played by Shabana Azmi, who refuses to leave her home. As communal tensions escalate, Sunny Deol’s character takes it upon himself to protect her from extremist elements.

The ensemble cast also includes Ali Fazal and Abhimanyu Singh in pivotal roles.

Release Date

Batwara 1947 is scheduled to release in cinemas on August 14. The film is expected to face box office competition from Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2, setting up one of the biggest Bollywood clashes of the Independence Day weekend.
