A seemingly routine visit to Srinagar has triggered an unexpected political controversy within the Congress Party, placing senior leader Shashi Tharoor under fire from his own colleagues.

The row erupted after Tharoor shared his impressions of the situation in Jammu and Kashmir following a meeting with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. In a post on social media platform X, the Congress MP described the region as showing “encouraging progress towards normalcy” while acknowledging that significant challenges still remain.

Tharoor said he had an extensive discussion with the Lieutenant Governor and welcomed what he described as positive outreach efforts involving local cultural and social organisations.

While the remarks may have appeared uncontroversial to many observers, they quickly sparked a backlash from within the Congress.

Among the strongest critics was Ravinder Sharma, the party’s chief spokesperson in Jammu and Kashmir, who questioned Tharoor’s assessment and suggested that the senior leader should have spent more time interacting with ordinary residents of the Valley before drawing conclusions.

According to Sharma, understanding the ground reality requires direct engagement with people affected by the region’s political and social challenges.

The disagreement has exposed a deeper divide within the party over how to assess the current situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

For years, the Congress has criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its handling of the region, particularly the decision to revoke Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and convert it from a state into a Union Territory. Party leaders have repeatedly argued that the government has failed to fully restore political normalcy and democratic processes.

Against that backdrop, Tharoor’s observation about “encouraging progress” has been viewed by some party members as being at odds with the Congress’s established position.

Political analysts note that the controversy comes at a sensitive time for the opposition party, which is seeking to maintain a unified stance on several key national issues.

Tharoor, known for his independent voice and nuanced political commentary, has often expressed views that differ in tone from the party’s official line. His supporters argue that acknowledging positive developments does not necessarily mean ignoring existing concerns or abandoning criticism where it is warranted.

The episode has reignited discussions about internal democracy within political parties and the space available for leaders to express individual assessments on complex issues.

As reactions continue to emerge, the controversy has once again highlighted the challenges faced by major political parties in balancing diverse opinions while presenting a coherent public message.

Whether the disagreement remains a brief internal debate or develops into a larger political issue remains to be seen. For now, however, Tharoor’s remarks have succeeded in doing one thing—sparking a conversation that extends far beyond his visit to Srinagar.
