Shahid Kapoor was cast in Udta Punjab before producers came on board, reveals Director Abhishek Chaubey

A decade after Udta Punjab sparked conversations across India with its hard-hitting portrayal of substance abuse, filmmaker Abhishek Chaubey has shared fascinating behind-the-scenes details about the making of the cult film.

The director recently revealed that Shahid Kapoor was the very first actor to join the project—long before any production house officially backed the film. According to Chaubey, Shahid’s faith in the script and deep interest in the character played a major role in shaping what eventually became one of the actor’s most acclaimed performances.

Shahid Joined the Film Before It Had a Producer

Looking back on the early stages of the project, Chaubey explained that Shahid committed himself to the film when it was still in development.

“Shahid was the first person to come on board. At that stage, we didn’t even have a producer attached to the film,” the director recalled.

He added that the actor was genuinely fascinated by the world the film explored and actively contributed ideas to build his character, Tommy Singh, a reckless Punjabi rockstar struggling with drug addiction.

One such idea was Tommy’s distinctive long-haired appearance before his dramatic transformation later in the story.

According to Chaubey, while the script always required the character to cut his hair at a crucial point, the decision to give Tommy an extended rockstar look beforehand came directly from Shahid.

The Painful Transformation Behind Tommy Singh

The actor reportedly wore a heavy wig for long periods during filming to achieve the desired look.

Chaubey admitted that the process was physically uncomfortable but Shahid remained committed to maintaining authenticity.

The director also spent considerable time sharing his research on addiction with the actor to help him understand the physical and emotional effects experienced by substance abusers.

Since Tommy Singh constantly exists in a state of chaos and instability, Chaubey was particularly careful about ensuring the performance never became exaggerated or unrealistic.

“We constantly discussed how far we could push the character without making him feel fake,” the filmmaker said.

Bringing Vulnerability to a Wild Character

Despite Tommy Singh’s loud and unpredictable personality, Chaubey believes Shahid’s greatest contribution was bringing vulnerability to the role.

He recalled a memorable scene in which Tommy hesitates before consuming drugs ahead of a concert performance.

According to the director, Shahid conveyed fear, regret, and helplessness with a single expression, creating one of the film’s most emotionally powerful moments.

“He brought out the feeling that the character knew he was destroying himself, even without saying a word,” Chaubey explained.

A Strict Diet to Portray Addiction

One of the lesser-known aspects of Shahid Kapoor’s preparation involved a dramatic physical transformation.

To realistically portray a young man consumed by addiction, the actor reportedly followed a strict diet that significantly reduced his food intake.

Chaubey explained that people struggling with severe addiction often neglect nutrition, leading to a lean and exhausted appearance.

To achieve that look, Shahid reportedly survived on minimal food while consuming large amounts of black coffee to maintain the restless energy required for the role.

The combination reportedly increased his heart rate and helped him capture the edgy, anxious behaviour of Tommy Singh throughout the film.

A Performance Still Remembered 10 Years Later

Released in 2016, Udta Punjab featured an ensemble cast including Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Diljit Dosanjh, and Shahid Kapoor.

While the film earned praise for its bold storytelling and social commentary, Shahid’s portrayal of Tommy Singh remains one of the standout performances of his career.

Ten years later, the film continues to be remembered as a landmark project in contemporary Hindi cinema, and Chaubey’s latest revelations offer a fresh glimpse into the dedication that went into bringing its unforgettable characters to life.
