“Amitabh Bachchan Destroyed Rajesh Khanna”: When Salim Khan Warned Rishi Kapoor After He Rejected Trishul

Bollywood history is filled with stories of rivalries, missed opportunities and decisions that could have changed careers forever. But few are as striking as the conversation Rishi Kapoor recalled having with legendary screenwriter Salim Khan after turning down a role in Trishul.

Rishi, who had become a major young star after the phenomenal success of Bobby in 1973, was already building a reputation as one of Hindi cinema’s most promising leading men when the incident reportedly took place.

The role he rejected, however, came from the hugely successful Salim-Javed screenwriting partnership.

And according to Rishi’s 2017 autobiography Khullam Khulla: Rishi Kapoor Uncensored, Salim Khan was not particularly impressed by the actor’s decision.

“How Did You Have the Guts to Refuse Salim-Javed?”

Rishi Kapoor recalled that he was playing snooker when Salim Khan approached him and questioned his decision.

In his autobiography, Rishi remembered Salim asking:“How did you have the guts to refuse Salim–Javed?”

The young actor, however, apparently did not back down.

Rishi told him that he simply did not like the role.

That straightforward response allegedly prompted an even more dramatic warning from Salim Khan.

According to Rishi’s recollection, the screenwriter told him that virtually nobody had previously rejected the Salim-Javed team and warned that such a decision could have serious consequences for his career.“We can destroy your career.”

For a young actor at the beginning of his career, the statement would have sounded particularly intimidating.

But Salim Khan reportedly went further, using the careers of Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan to explain what he meant.

The Rajesh Khanna-Amitabh Bachchan Example

Rishi recalled Salim Khan telling him that Rajesh Khanna had once been offered Zanjeer but rejected it.

According to Rishi’s account, Salim said they did not directly harm Khanna’s career. Instead, they helped create an alternative leading man in Amitabh Bachchan.

The warning was blunt: what happened to Rajesh Khanna could happen to Rishi Kapoor.

The story is particularly fascinating because Zanjeer, released in 1973, became a turning point in Amitabh Bachchan’s career and played a major role in establishing his famous “Angry Young Man” persona.

Bachchan’s rise subsequently coincided with a major shift in the Hindi film industry, as the dominance of the romantic superstar gradually gave way to a new generation of action-oriented heroes.

Rishi Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan Took Different Paths

Interestingly, Rishi Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan belonged to the same generation but developed remarkably different screen identities.

Bachchan became synonymous with intense action dramas and the angry-young-man archetype, while Rishi emerged as one of Hindi cinema’s defining romantic heroes.

Bobby, which launched Rishi as a leading man opposite Dimple Kapadia, became a landmark success and established him as a youth icon.

Over the following decades, Rishi built a career around romance, music and family dramas, appearing in films that showcased a very different style from Bachchan’s action-heavy roles.

The two actors eventually shared the screen in several memorable projects, demonstrating that their careers did not have to be defined by the rivalry suggested in Salim Khan’s warning.

Rejecting Trishul Did Not Destroy Rishi Kapoor

Perhaps the biggest irony of the story is that Salim Khan’s warning never materialised in the way it was supposedly intended.

Rishi Kapoor continued to enjoy a long and successful career after rejecting Trishul.

Rather than disappearing from the industry, he remained one of Bollywood’s most recognisable stars for decades.

His career also evolved considerably. The romantic hero of the 1970s and 1980s eventually embraced more mature and challenging character roles, earning renewed appreciation from audiences and critics.

He appeared in films such as Agneepath, D-Day, Kapoor & Sons, 102 Not Out and Mulk, proving that his career had much more range than his early romantic image suggested.

Rishi also continued to work with younger actors and actresses throughout his career. His filmography included collaborations with several newcomers, much like his early pairing with Dimple Kapadia in Bobby.

A Warning That Became a Bollywood Anecdote

Looking back, the story says as much about the power of Salim-Javed during their peak as it does about Rishi Kapoor’s confidence.

At the height of their influence, the writing duo was behind some of the most important films of 1970s Hindi cinema. Their association with Amitabh Bachchan also became one of the defining actor-writer partnerships of that era.

Yet Rishi’s own career demonstrates that refusing one project even one associated with such a powerful creative team does not necessarily determine an actor’s destiny.

The story also offers an intriguing glimpse into the competitive atmosphere of 1970s Bollywood, when a single film could dramatically alter the trajectory of a star.

Rishi Kapoor ultimately chose his own path.

And decades later, the warning that he could be “destroyed” became less a prediction of his downfall and more an unforgettable chapter in the actor’s remarkable career.
