‘Why Is Amit Shah So Scared?’: Rahul Gandhi Demands SC-Monitored Probe into Alleged Crackdown on Student Protesters

Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Thursday intensified his attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, demanding a Supreme Court-monitored investigation into the alleged police action against student protesters across the country.

Sharing a video on social media that purportedly showed police using force against students, Gandhi questioned why Shah had not addressed Parliament on the issue, alleging that the Home Minister was avoiding questions over the alleged crackdown.

Rahul Gandhi Seeks Supreme Court-Monitored Inquiry

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Rahul Gandhi called for an independent, high-powered committee under the supervision of the Supreme Court to investigate the allegations of excessive force against students.

He said students deserved justice and urged that the inquiry examine the alleged “brutalities” committed during the protests.

The Congress leader was referring to the police action during the July 20 Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led march to Parliament, as well as the reported crackdown on student demonstrations in other parts of the country.

In another social media post, Rahul Gandhi directly targeted Amit Shah, questioning why the Home Minister had not responded to the allegations in Parliament.

“Why is Amit Shah so scared?” Gandhi asked, alleging that Shah was avoiding the House instead of explaining the alleged police action against students.

He further claimed that the Home Minister’s silence “reeks of guilt.”

Congress Steps Up Attack

A day earlier, Rahul Gandhi had demanded Amit Shah’s removal from the Union Cabinet while also seeking a Supreme Court-monitored investigation into what he described as a “brutal attack” on student protesters.

The Congress MP alleged that pellet guns were used during the police action. He argued that if the alleged use of force had been authorised by the Home Minister, he should be held accountable, and if he was unaware of it, it raised serious questions about his oversight of the ministry.

BJP Rejects Allegations

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongly denied Rahul Gandhi’s allegations, accusing the Congress leader of making false and baseless claims.

The ruling party alleged that Gandhi had presented a “bundle of lies” and demanded that he apologise for what it described as the misuse of proceedings in the Lok Sabha.

Remarks in Parliament Trigger Political Row

Rahul Gandhi first raised the issue during a Lok Sabha debate on a Bill proposing stricter punishment for paper leak offences.

During his speech, he accused Amit Shah of being responsible for the alleged police excesses against student protesters, leading to strong objections from members of the Treasury benches.

Several portions of his remarks were later expunged by the Speaker. However, Gandhi reiterated his allegations outside Parliament and renewed his demand for an independent probe monitored by the Supreme Court.

The controversy has further intensified the political confrontation between the Congress and the BJP, with both parties standing firmly by their respective positions as demands for accountability and counter-allegations continue to dominate the national political discourse.
