Rahul Dravid to Coach England? Report Claims ECB Is Eyeing the Indian Legend After Brendon McCullum’s Exit, But There’s a Catch…
The former India head coach has reportedly emerged as a surprise candidate for England’s Test coaching role, although reports suggest he is not keen on returning to full-time coaching.
Could one of India’s greatest cricketers soon find himself leading England’s Test team? If recent reports are to be believed, that unlikely possibility has entered the conversation following the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB)‘s decision to part ways with Brendon McCullum as England’s Test coach.
According to a report by The Daily Telegraph, former India captain and coach Rahul Dravid is among the names being considered to take charge of England’s red-ball side ahead of the next Ashes series.
McCullum’s Test Tenure Comes to an End
Brendon McCullum’s four-year stint as England’s Test coach reportedly ended after the team’s disappointing performances in the longest format, culminating in a 2-1 home series defeat to New Zealand last month.
While the ECB is understood to have decided that a fresh approach is needed for Test cricket, McCullum is expected to continue in his role as England’s white-ball coach.

During his tenure, the former New Zealand captain oversaw 49 Test matches, registering 27 victories and 20 defeats. England enjoyed strong performances at home but struggled to replicate that success overseas, suffering notable series defeats in India and Pakistan.
Why Rahul Dravid’s Name Has Emerged
Rahul Dravid is regarded as one of the most respected figures in world cricket, known for his calm leadership, technical expertise and emphasis on player development.
As India’s head coach, Dravid guided the team to the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title and also oversaw India’s campaign in the 2023 ICC World Test Championship Final.
According to the report, his detailed coaching methods and deep understanding of Test cricket have made him an attractive option for England as the board searches for a coach capable of strengthening the team’s performances in the traditional format.

But There’s a Major Hurdle
Despite being linked with the role, the report claims Dravid currently has “no desire” to return to full-time coaching.
However, it also notes that the England Test coaching position could potentially suit his lifestyle better than previous assignments, as it would reportedly allow for extended periods at home while focusing exclusively on the longest format of the game.
The report suggests the ECB is expected to at least explore whether Dravid would be interested before finalising its decision.
Who Else Is in the Race?
Rahul Dravid is not the only high-profile name reportedly under consideration.
Former England coach Andy Flower is believed to be one of the leading contenders, thanks to his successful previous spell with England that included three Ashes series victories and helping the team reach the No. 1 position in the ICC Test rankings.
Flower has also built an impressive reputation in franchise cricket, most recently guiding Royal Challengers Bengaluru to back-to-back Indian Premier League (IPL) titles, according to the report.
Another candidate is Richard Dawson, currently head coach of Glamorgan, who has earned praise for his tactical coaching and success in county cricket.
Other reported names in contention include Kumar Sangakkara, Andrew Flintoff, Mike Hesson and Justin Langer.
No Official Confirmation Yet
Neither the ECB nor Rahul Dravid has officially commented on the report.
As of now, the shortlist remains speculative, and no appointment has been announced. Whether Dravid ultimately considers the opportunity or not, the possibility of one of India’s most celebrated cricket minds coaching England has already become one of the sport’s most talked-about stories.
